I've had some interest in the custom brushes I used to create the texture in my latest painting, The King Without A Country ( http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/Forum2/HTML/005362.html ).

Here is a small set containing most of the brushes I used. Just download the file, and load it up from your brush palette in Photoshop.

http://www.tbns.net/rdgraffix/Rough_Oil_Brushes

I can't take credit for creating these, they're merely modifications and alterations of brushes I sourced when I was planning the pic.

They are also fairly large, as I was working on a high-res, loose styled pic, so you may find it hard to get pixel-perfect detail with these. They should work as a good starting point for your own brushes though.

[edit] - try playing around with the opacity, size and even colour options if you have a tablet. -

Anyway, have fun, and let me know if they've helped you at all.

I'm guessing your on a Mac because theres no file extension?

For Windows users I think the only way to download these is if you use Getright, because Netscape(I dont know about IE) will label all non-extensions with .html automaticly(grrr). So try that Ex, then just add .ABR after the file.

(just downloaded with Getright and works fine. Thanks! These are great brushes!)

I really hate starting a whole new thread just for one question.. but when you all paint, do you use the Wet Edges option?

Yep, you're right Shousetsu, it's a Mac.

Here's the file with the extension, in case it helps:
http://www.tbns.net/rdgraffix/Rough_Oil_Brushes.ABR

From what I remember of my old PC days, isn't it a right-click to download a file from the link? Argh! Memory ... like .. a .. siv.

Ex, personally, I only use wet edges when I'm after a quick, watercolour feel. Normally I don't find too much use for it, but that's just me.

Awesome, got them to work. I just right clicked the link and saved them anywhere I wanted to. When it asks you how you want to save it go to the scroll bar at the bottom and instead of saving as a text file save it as All Files...then just type '.abr' after the name and it'll save as a .abr type. Then load it up in Photoshop. Make sure you do the initial saving as a .abr BEFORE the file even downloads 'cuz it didn't work when I tried converting it AFTER getting it in .txt format.

Oh, and thanks for taking the time to put up the brushes, rdgraffix!

I'm glad you like them, and, like ex, I'd be interested in seeing what you can make with them.

Sorry about the size of the big brushes Trance-R, but I found them essential to create a loose feeling in the large areas.

Kardis: yep, that's right, a G4 - no toaster design or dual processor though
I've got 640mb ram, with a 9gig harddrive/scratch disk, and *still* I'm finding it limiting. - but, then again, I won't be happy until we can work on mural-sized high-res files, painting with photorealistic, smudging, metre-high custom brushes in real time.
