I have thought of the idea of using dual monitors for painting in Photoshop. I use PC only. Does anyone know of good 3D/2D cards that support dual monitors in NT?
thanks. |

Dual monitors are only supported by Windows 98 and Windows 2000. In order to run dual monitor you'll need an AGP and a PCI graphics card (or two PCI graphics cards if you don't have an AGP). Most modern cards support dual monitors.
There is an AGP card by Matrox, however, that supports dual monitors on one card. |

I just bought a cheap $30.00 2d card to run my 2nd monitor. It only goes to 1024 @ 24bit color, but since it's only 15", that's really all that's necessary. My main monitor runs off a TNT 2. Oh, I'm using Windows 98. Don't think 95 supports it.

BEWARE!!!!!
The Matrox G400 series dual head does not work with Windows 2000. It works fine in
Windows 98, but Windows 2000 will not
recognize the two separate monitors because
they use the same chip on the video card.
What you end up with is one huge desktop
which spans both monitors. Mine was like
2560x1024 and it really sucked. Had to buy
another video card after shelling out $250
for the matrox card. Microsoft has no
plans to fix this either. |

Hey braindead, thanks for the great link! That ultramon is just what the doctor ordered.
As for the dual monitor thing, it's sort can be a PITA sometimes. But once you go multi-mon, u'll never want to go back!
When I got my TNT2U I had a leftover cheapo vid card gathering dust. So I figured I'd get a cheap 17" to accompany my 19" iiyama. As luck would have it, I found a great deal on a 19" samsung for 300 bux even, including tax and shipping.
There are some pitfalls however, at least with the two monitor two vid card implementation. I dunno about single card solutions. First, many games don't let you access the other monitor. Other games force you to turn off u'r 2nd monitor (all OGL games for example). Erm, quicktime seems to dislike my 2nd monitor. For some reason I can only move palletes to the other monitor in photoshop, but not an actual image . I haven't tried any 3d apps with it, anyone else care to chime in?

Can someone tell me how a graphics pad reacts with two monitors? I know when I switch resolutions (From high to low), the pad acts a little funny due to the reduced screen size. I'm wondering if the added desktop space would restrict the penstrokes on the pad. Just wondering.

Thanks for all the feedback. I guess I may have to switch over to 98 (from NT) to get dual monitors for painting.

HOW 2 MONITORS AFFECTS TABLETS:
My System: Primary Monitor 21" @ 1280x1024
Secondary 17" @ 800x600
You don't have to switch between monitors,
your graphics pad should span both.

Mine works like the above diagram. The
width of the tablet covers both monitors.
I have a 12x12 ArtPad and didn't notice
any loss in precision or anything like that,
but I can see how that might affect a smaller
pad differently.

Reply to a very old thread I know.. but I have a question and didn't want to start a new one.
First off, with the newest Wacom drivers, you can setup your tablet to only be active on 1 monitor or the other, or both.
My question is this.. I'm running dual monitors here.. but for DVD playback (among other things) I need the AGP card to be the primary display. Anyone here know how I might do that?
