I tried the famous brown paper (Foxriver brand - Confetti) and I have to say this paper rules! Here is a little example below. This is mostly an exercise, so I didn't really care about mistakes, background. I just wanted to try something cool and fast to test the paper. And I really like it! Best of all you can work with crayons on it, or even paint (gouache or acrylics). I have to try that and post it later. Foxriver is not the only brand you can find with some nice colored papers like that, so go to your local paper shop (NOT to an art shop) and try to find some nice recycled paper. Try it and you will like it!

Nice sketches Black_fish. Where did you get the paper though? I went to my local art stores and I can't find it anywhere. I know someone here mentioned this before.

About the paper: the trick is to NOT go to an art shop if you want to find good paper. In art stores the choice is limited, the prices are ridiculously high and the quality not that great. I went to a normal paper shop (http://www.kellypaper.com/) where they sell paper for usual writing and printing (and mostly for the office). This brown one (one more time FoxRiver Confetti) is probably not made to paint or draw on; it's just a thick recycled paper. But the thing is it works amazing well for drawing: the pencil doesn't 'carve' the paper and can be erased numerous times, the ink stays on it and dries very fast, and it has a little grain very good for pencil drawing or crayons. I'm pretty sure you can find that kind of recycled paper anywhere in the world, as long as you don't try to find it in an art shop

And thanks for all your nice comments.

Actually, I've looked EVERYWHERE. I checked every art store, craft store, supply store, and office store in the area and all I could find was a box of light blue confetti paper for like $20 for about 10 sheets. It wasn't even good paper. Ugly color, hardly any grain. Is there anywhere you can order from directly?

long time no talk black_fish ;-)
really like the last one ( the profile ) nice simples higlights there. and strong blacks, too. also like the small detail of the glasses on the smilling skull on the second piece.
looks like being back to paper was a good idea for you.

If you want to try this drawing style but don't have the paper, you can do the following to get the same effect:

Find yourself some thicker white paper (at office depot or something like that). Do your drawing and ink it. Now, using a marker w/ a vaule of #3 or 4, do a wash over the entire line drawing. Now you can go back w/ a white pencil and bring out the highlights.
Add some gouache and really pop it. Thus, you can get the exact effect. I've used this technique while it school, and it looks pretty cool. Wish i had a sample to show....but maybe i'll do a quick later tonight.

K, hope this helps..

Marker over the whole thing? That could get expensive... I just love the grain of the confetti paper though, makes the drawings look so much better, I think.

Oh, and what's the white pencil? Just a regular white colored pencil?

If you can't find good paper in your area try the kelly website (www.kellypaper.com) or the foxriver website (http://www.foxriverpaper.com). Other than that you can try the Vortx trick. I don't think it's expensive if you don't work on big formats or if you don't need 500 sheets of paper
Regarding the white pencil I think Vortx is talking about the regular white pencil that you can find in art shop. I don't really like it though (the pencil not vortex ): it smudges and doesn't stay on the paper, and it also show the grain. I prefer white paint, but that's a matter of taste. Anything white can do I guess.
There is also another technique to make brown paper: rub a wet tea bag on it, and add little pieces of instant coffee here and there to create some 'texture'. It's pretty inexpensive but you need some good thick paper to take that kind of punishment.

Beet: thanks for your comment. My email hasn't changed if you want to talk to me.

For tinting a lot of paper, you can use tea bags. Get a shallow pan filled with warm water, load it up with tea bags, and then leave some paper in it for a bit. You don't really get a dark brown, more of a yellowish wash, but its still a nice change from white.

Red onions will give interesting tints also.

Learned this stuff from a Hungarian figure drawing teacher named Zoltan . . . apparently, proper art supplies are hard to come by in Hungary

Hey for the paper what you should try and do is goto your local grocery store and get some paper bags, its cheap and very good texture to it, it works very well , or you can get some from the butcher, the butcher paper works well , and to finish this post i have to say i love these pics, this style of chars is my fav, kind of like vortx and some other that draw chars like this, truly and insperation for me , thanks ..

Hey thanks Proximo

I'm happy to see that some people here like this kind of clean-line comic drawing, with less emphasis on realism than on 'effectiveness' (at least that's what I'm shooting for). And because I can't paint like Craig Mullins I prefer to stick to something different.
I'm trying to work hard on some new drawings right now and I know that Vortx is doing the same (I work with him so I know ). I hope more people will post that kind of art on the forum!
