I guess you were going for a cartoony look?
I made a little example that i hope can help you a bit it's a little rough but i think you'll get the idea anyway:
First thing think out a lightsource. Where is the light comming from and how will be shadows be? Let the shadow follow the shape of the face .Keep it simple when it's suppose
to be cartoony only one shadow and maybe a highlight colour. Don't add things without knowing why. Keep it logic and clean.
You can use the overlay option if you want,
but it changes the colours
Multiply works better i think cause it still
keeps your'e original linework.

Can you edit it , and place a correct version on the forum ? Cause I just can't get it right , I've tried shadows etc ... but I just can't get it correct , so here you go , please edit it , and show me how it is supposed to be done

Hmm a newbie helping a newbie, heres my attempt, make a transparent layer above the color and set the layer blend mode options to Overlay, then paint on that new layer with black and white for tones
heres my try:
