Here's something from 1998 I did for a character design for the guy that created the initial Final Fantasy series (name slips me right now). The project never went anywhere, at least not with this sketch...
There are sever problems with this piece, hands, feet, and the width of the head come to mind. The angularity of the figure is a stylistic choice, however any feedback is always welcome.
I'll post new stuff in the future, since I feel I'm much improved in the last 2 years. (I hope at least... )

Niiiice. Awesome to have you guys in here. Love the coloring job, even if it is 2 years old... I'd say something about that lens flare, but the pic's 2 years old so I guess it's excusable... |

Ok, maybe I don't read enough comics. I think the last time I bought one was somewhere around Spawn #20. So, can someone explain to me what this "Liquid" thing is? I understand comic coloring. It's straight forward enough. But how is Liquid different?

Hey Chris,
Since when do you Draw? This board always suprises me. That's a pretty slick doodle.
I can't help but stare at the legs I really like the sharp hips and calves. Thumbs up from me.
I'm kind of curious to see just the colors Layer of this without the lineart on it. Could you post that up?
Only things that bug me are that the head doesn't seem to match with the style of the body. I thik it's the thick weight of the line on the shoulders going into the thin outline on her face. Or something like that.
.. but that's just my opinion so take what you will.
And the Lensflare isn't TOO distracting but it's in there... for shame!
he he

A.Buttle,
Liquid is a digital painting company. It is comprised of Aron Lusan and Christian Lichtner. (Excuse me, if I got this wrong)
They are by far the most popular, comic colorists out there.
They do have there own style. That has been imitated by many colorists. They are the Joe Mad of coloring. (Being that many pencillers have copied Joe Maduriera's style.)
Cool pic, Chris. Was the lines penciled or done digitally? And do you use a tablet? I assume you do.
And just to push my luck... Were's the light source? The sun is behind her, yet the highlights would suggest a fairly bright light from behind us.
(Leave it to me, I've already insulted them.)

Hey Art Adams was around a long time before Joe Madureira came along. He originated that style. Joe Mad just brought it back. |

I'd say she'd look sexier if the silouhette wouldn't be too edgy. Make it rounder. Her feet also lack definition. But great colors, shading, though background doesn't fit too well |

Excellent point Chapel.
Art Adams is the man.
Cool pic Liquid.. I've always liked your coloring work, real bright colors you've managed even after seps. I know how much CMYK can mud up bright colors.

Excellent, Chris - thanks for joining and posting. Hey I was on your site looking at the original color separations you have for sale - are those marker? Cool looking stuff. I wonder if you'd be able to post any of those hand colored color guides...?

Wow. Didn't expect this kind of warm welcome. Thanks for being so nice! (Beats getting my chops busted...) Let me see if I can answer all the questions.
NEX/IMAGEOMEGA: For those that are asking for a tutorial we're hoping to do one in the future. Maybe its even going to be in wizard. Sort of like a follow up to the color theory article.
TINUSCH: Sorry about the lensflare... [Hanging my head in shame Gotta admit though, I still like them for certain things... [ducks to avoid rotten tomatoes being thrown]].
NOVA: THANKS!! I'll post the SoulReaver cover too. Its actually one of my favorites, 'coz we got to spend more time on it than usual, and we had alot more freedom to do what we wanted. Comics is super deadline oriented, which doens'nt leave much time for going as crazy with things as we might want to. Not to mention that most of the time we have to follow certain guidelines put down by the client, afterall they're the ones paying us.
DEAN: I only have the finished piece of art left. The 'undercoloring' is long gone. Since I'm constantly in need of HD space, I erase most stuff after its 'done'. I agree with you though, I do think that the head doesn't quite match the 'edgy-line' style I used for the body. Something I would do differently today.
SERAPHIRE: Lines were penciled and scanned in. However, after seeing some of the amazing stuff here, I would love to try doing the entire thing with the WACOM [plug, plug]. The lightsources obviously don't match. What you can't tell from this picture is that the entire job consisted of about 8 sketches all containing the same background. Thus, the background is treated separately on purpose, since it only serves as a graphic element to tie the entire presentation together.
FRANCIS: Thanks so much! So samples of my old color guides are at: http://www.go-liquid.com/content/menu/subm.htm .
All those guides were done purely with Markers and color pencils. However, keep in mind that most of the Deadpool guides were colored over pencil photocopies, thus the contrast and lineart suffer a bit...
Pheww... hope that I answered all the questions. Thanks again, for all the kind words, its very much appreciated!
Now back to work... argh.
