I don't know if this is mentioned before but I quess it isn't. I couldn't find any reslults for the word "Terragen" with the search option...
Terragen? What the heck is Terragen, you probably think...
Well, Terragen is a free piece of software you can download at www.terragen.de It's a program where you can create the most beautiful landscapes. There are also a shitload of options which you can use to adjust your landscape (view) such as camera position, location (low/high) of the light source, water level (and wave properties), reflection of lightsource(s) etc etc...
Go download it at www.terragen.de (2.55 mb) and have fun, I'm sure you would!

(the jpeg quality isn't too high cause it's already 192 kb)

A word of caution about Terragen:
I can spot it a mile away.
Its one of those tools like Bryce that makes it easy to do an okay image, but damned near impossible to do anything controlled or masterful. Terragen won't let you make plants, define your own clouds, or otherwise tamper with its built-in look.
Don't get me wrong, its great fun as a toy, but I question its usefulness to an artist who wants any degree of control.

Hey-ey
I know Terragen... and have been messing around with it for some time, actually.
Ballistic - I totally agree with you. But actually you do have some degree of control. You can import bmp greyscale images to define your mountain heights plus use costum texture setups.
Future versions will have more control, but the program has been put on hold for now since the programmer has moved on to work for a company that doesn't allow him to develop Terragen as a side project. The Terragen renderer def. beats Bryce by quite a few yards... But try it yourself...
