Remember that first ship deck I posted a long time ago?
Well, I never said thanks, and I'm not sure if you ever saw the finished version we used.

Here it is. I think it's a major improvement over the first one. Not THAT interesting, but it was seen for about three seconds or so. Anyway, thanks for helping me out all that time ago with your kickass redo.

I like, I like - do you have the original Spooge one? Your's is great, but I'd love to also see his. I learn so much through these redos!

Anthony, hold on to your ass. There's gonna be a jolt if you've never seen it.

Warning: This will seriously diminish the quality of my painting by comparison.

Again, this is a painting by Spooge

Spooges work makes me feel like i want to put two sharp pencils up my nose and bang my head on a desk so that they penetrate my brains.

Use mechanical pencils so you don't have to sharpen them.

Klaivu:
You shouldn't be saying that. The thing you should say is: "Hey, Spooge rocks, and he's a human being, just like me, so I am as capable of accomplishing the stuff he does. In order to do that, I must practice alot and alot and alot and alot. I'm 18 and he's 36 (?), so that means I have more than enough time to sharpen my photoshop skills. Less talk, more draw, Hooray!"

Some of you might want to mention some argument like, "Oh, it's been said that Einstein and Newton had more braincells that allowed them to figure out more stuff than others." Maybe so, but that doesn't mean they sat on their chairs and whistled and all of a sudden physics equations popped into their brain magically. It was a challenge. They had to think and think and work work work to overcome it. Overcoming challenges is what makes life worth living. It's fun, too.

And that doesn't go for Klaivu only, anyone can do it, you just need to focus on the important stuff of your goals and do everything you must to accomplish them. The same goes for any domain, might it be music, digital art, computer programming, noveling, etc. You just need to sit and think about your life and what you want to do with it for the next 40 to 50 years. It's not rather you have the right talent or not, what's important is having the right attitude torwards your ambitions.

Some choose to accomplish great things in life, others choose to drink booze. It's all a matter of relativity.

Nicely put Snake.. tho a certain amount of generosity from mother nature does make a diffirence.. but yeah it does take buckets of effort (not booze) as well..

Danny: Yeah, having a "better" brain might help, but capabilities of the human brain are yet to be proven, and seeing how much potential energy one human has, I would say it's most likely that one has to put MORE effort to accomplish the same thing as someone who's brain would be "better".

Put more effort in turning potential into kinetic. Some have more kinetic already in movement than others.

I smoke too much pot to have a half decent thinking foundation to work with.

But I can sketch some wild stuff when I'm lit =)

Only on weekends though.

Wild doesn't necessarily mean good, y'know.

Welp, I guess we need people to clean our washrooms and make our burgers.

Looks great mozebros! Glad I could help.

Most of you guys have a big head start on me. I did a little, little bit in High School, but it never was much good, like "you should be an artist." The teachers hated it. I didn't take it back up till I was 23.

Time doing it, repetition, like scales in music, a steady pressure over the years, interests that does not diminish. These will get you there. I have the trouble liking too many things, even too many types of art that each could consume a lifetime.

I think I told the story of the giant pickup truck riding out the suspension filled with life drawings from school. Off to the dump. It shows how many drawings it takes. And I am by no means a good draughtsman. I know structure, but that is where it ends.

So keep on drawing and painting and thinking and learning. The most versatile and true talent is perseverance.

And I haven't gotten as far as I should. I have so far ro go till I am where I would like to be.

You know at least 2 things Spooge, if I can say: lighting and drama. That's the secret!
Like Snakegrunger was saying it's not about having a bigger or better brain, or, I should add, about having the last Wacom gizmo, the new 1 Ghz PC or whatever else. It's mostly just HARD FREAKING WORK. Everytime I see something good, like the posts from Spooge, Aliasmoze, Loki, Joachim, the only I want to do is work harder. Not to be better (it's not a contest) but to do better. So, thanks guys for posting all those great images!
Spooge I really admire your understanding of light more than everything else you do. THAT is really amazing.

I'd just like to say that I never feel down when seeing people like Spooge, Fred, or Micke, anymore than I feel down when studying DaVinci or Mucha. They're better...but I'm getting better too. I just create, cause I'd go nuts if I didn't. I don't question it, and I'm always happy with my work. I'm happy with it, but the quest to improve yourself is inherent in the human psychy, and it drives you on. If you focus on it, it can become unmanagable, and the road is more difficult. I find that much of life is about tricking your brain into thinking a certain way, but still knowing that it's not like that really. But anyway, as long as you do the best you can, you should have no regrets. I don't.
BTW Spooge, since when are there huge lantern spotlights on ships?

Snake Grunger: this is very true. Good you said it.

Just a sidenote philosophical question: Can creativity be learned?

Nex: I dont think anyone "owns" creativity. I think every person on earth is in touch with a great amount of creativity in a subtle way. Once they begin to explore their imaginative side, many "creative" ideas will come. As Spooge says, and this is so important for us "amatures" to realize, we need to practice and practice to feel confident with our work. Also, it is not easy to meet ones expectations of how they want something to turn out.

I've found that once I begin sketching, I can keep going for hours. It's like I want to draw something different each time, and I get an urge to try a new idea

Great thread Moze.

Spooge said: "The most versatile and true talent is perseverance."

How superbly written Spooge. I couldn't agree more.

Thanks again, Spooge.

GB, thanks for the comment. Yeah, see how far I've come in that time? I can draw the stuff; just can't paint it well quite yet.

Milano, lay off the weed.

Spooge, thanks again.

Black fish, thanks for the comment.

Nex, everyone is inherently creative. If you're simply thinking, "I wonder what I'm going to eat tonight", then you're being creative. It's HOW you use it that counts.

Farwalker, thanks.
------------------------------------------
I agree with what Spooge said. Personally, I have drawn since before I can remember. But I've never considered myself to have any "natural" gift. It's just practice. The proof? Name me a person who can draw or paint well who hasn't practiced.

I have a somewhat one-sided training. I am a traditional animator, which means figure drawing and lots of it. I remember a few years ago when my group of buddies were training. Nobody was particularly good. But you go out, you practice and practice. Six months later, a year later, two years later, every step of the way you could see the progress. The guys who committed to practicing got extremely good, even those who started out the worst.

My point is that IMO it can all be learned if you respect yourself enough to seek out the training you need. And be patient. Anybody here can be as good as Spooge with the right approach.

That's my nickel's worth

i like to come here and look at people's art. because sometimes i can help (very few times) and all of the time i can learn something new. for awhile it makes me depressed, like "oh, i can't do that" but then i think about it awhile and decide i'm going to. although i rarely(aka never) succeed, its good practice. and theres nothing more motivating to me than to see what i might be able to do someday, and chasing it. this may sound waaay too perky but i think it works.

Well aside from the mostly friend community in here and all the help you can get, I find this to be one of the best places to look for inspiration. All the artwork floating around here from all calibre of artists. If for some reason the highly detailed stuff is annoying and depressing me today, I can look through and easily find some loose or even totally different paintings and sketches to look at and I'll likely feel inspired and energized to continue working on what I do. Tis what I do as part of my 'warm-up' routine for sketching and painting. Eh, probably far too early in the morning (bed time for me) for this to make much sense, so if you figure out what I'm saying kudos to you. Rereading it after getting interrupted I lost myself. =( Not a good sign!
