Ah, yes.. another one of Nova's free-form BB topics, willing to accept any kind of valuable perspectives.. *ducks*
A question I've always lived by is 'what makes an artist?'. And if you really look in depth at the meaning of it, you can find some interesting things. I've come up with the following answer (not definite, subject to fluctuation): anyone who has a true expressive soul, who is not afraid to expose what's *points to heart* in here whether it be in performing or visual arts, one who not only seeks to create 'eye candy' (good stuff, don't get me wrong) but brings something into existence (eg. creating a character) and/or stirrs up something in the viewer. Remember: I've found that a lot of artist are not as skilled at pencil and paper work as they are digital painting or 3D work for example, and find other ways to express themselves.
It's sad to admit that these days there are increasing numbers of people who, again, seek to only create eye candy for the furthering of their artistic ego rather than to produce art for art's sake. I am not naming names or pointing fingers; creating something that looks beautiful and comes from inside is, i believe, something that (myself included) we could should all strive for... no?
I'd love to hear some of your input on this idea, and please keep in mind this is merely my opinion.

A true artist is a person with a sufficiently inflated ego to call him/herself one.

Well said Spitfire.. HEAR HEAR!!
Personally.. I LOATHE the word Artist.. It's a highly polluted word and has no status to me whatsoever. There are people out there being labeled as artists for the mere act of having pissed in a bottle containing a crucifix, stacking up cans of soup, or just painting a canvas entirely blue. If that's all it takes to be an artist I can only conclude it to be an insult to be called one, rather than it being something to strive for.
To put it somewhat more mildly, I merely see the word artist as a label. Something to identify an individual by without having to nitpick and explain the above.
So if anyone catches me using the word artist to adress someone, please don't immediately assume I'm insulting them..
It can be a convenient word at times albeit an empty one under closer scrunity if you ask me..
'nuff
Danny

Danny...I strongly agree with you. To me though, the word artist has long lost its meaning amidst the birth of so called "Modern Mediums" (CGI included). To me it is the content of the Creator's work that counts, not what label s/he go under.
For too long now has the 'A' word lost its glorifying meaning, jusr like the all too used F*CK.
Also now matter how many special effects and filters are used, if it is shit it WILL always stink. So to all those Photoshop and Painter Newbies (Myself included), get some degree of skill before you go plastering dodgy effects on crap artwork.
Honesty is always appreciated.
Don't get me wrong but an Artist is a title/label that comes with skill. There are many people on this forum that deserve it, some don't (ME!).
So keep practicing and the reward WILL be yours one day.

I simply think it's not up to someone to call him/herself an artist. Rather, the title artist should be awarded by the audience.

The word 'artist' is more loaded in some languages than others it seems... In English, pretty much anyone who draws is called an artist it seems. But in Finnish, the word artist is much loftier somehow, reserved only for non-commercial fine artists - the rest are perhaps designers, graphicians, illustrators, portrait painters and so on, but not artists (for example, I'd never speak of "comic artists" or "computer artists" in Finnish, it just sounds corny). I guess it just shows that the romanticist ideal of the artist as a creative (starving) individual lives on in people's minds here...

Saffron you're right, i always call something i draw a pic or image, word 'artwork' or 'artist' used to describe what i do after translation just sounds silly and idiotic. Art is something magnificent not a mere act of expressing oneself. |

Isn't ART something that has the deeper meaning i.e. to cause emotions or a reaction in the audience / viewer?
hmm thought about it:
its NOT.
When somebody flips me the finger he may cause an emotional reaction but he obviously doesnt have to be an artist..

Then again can't ART be like: 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder'
What i'm saying is that it is up to the individual to decided what is art or not. After all it is the individual who makes it. Unless it was a collaboration, then my theory is screwed.
But different perceptions of ART are deterimed by different nationalities /cultures. Take the Finnish for example.
Just a waking thought really. |
