Does anyone here find using a regular ballpoint pen better than using a pencil for sketching? I know blending is faster and easier with a pencil, but I've been doing a lot of shading with those cheap little Bic and PaperMate pens, and I find that although it takes far longer and requires much more concentration and control, I'm a lot more satisfied with my work done with a pen. It just looks more solid and complete. Plus, it doesn't smudge like a pencil. Does anyone else use pens for sketching/shading? And could anyone post some of their pen-made pics?

I find pen is really good for doodling and those doodles usually turn out pretty well. I think it's because the pen flows easily and makes very distinct lines like when inking in comic books. Plus, you don't have to sharpen it.

I do sketches with almost anything I have under my hand, which usually ends up being some crappy ball-point pen. =)

I do like the pen sketch look very much. I use to do LOTS of pen drawings back in high school (some 9 years ago... damn, how time flies...), and loved the clean-shaved look, and the finite small line shading... the cool thing is that ball-point pens are also pressure sensitive, which is cool.

Hmm, for some reason, I often smudge the ink with the outer side of my small finger as I refine the drawing resting my hand on the surface for support, which kind of sucks. =)

blah.

I sketch and doodle more with pens than with pencils when I want to come up with drawing ideas. I like the strong solid lines that the pen gives you.

I tend to sketch and doodle loads with those cheap bic pens, and stuff usually turns out ok. They're cool cause you can ruff
in lightly to plan out the pic and then just work into it which I've done with alot of my pen sketches. The thick black lines do get on my nerves If I work on them in photoshop tho.

I've started using a fibre tip lately which looks neater, but the mistakes look much more obvious which is why I prefer using the bic I guess.

Hmm. That's a hard decision. Pen is great for drawing and it has it's own qualities, but I'd have to go for the good old pencil. It's the original and it has so much flexibility.

But I'm quite addicted to pens, cross hatching etc...
Here's a collage/drawing I did a while ago. All pen, no pencil, warning, it's about 200KB:

Hey, cool pic Jason! like your style. Kinda a cross between anime and graffiti.

This is one I did maybe a week ago, started as a doodle with a fibretip and I just got into it.
www.freespeech.org/darkpathimages/mechkaliburopt.jpg

I drew it in plain line, then put in the shading quicker than usual, and then just shaded over and defined the shadowier areas. I enjoyed doing this one tho cause I had a mad flow on it that I don't get that often. Cause it's more sketchy than usual it's harder to spot the mistakes aswell. The building in the background kinda came out all bent tho, which is why they have rulers cos....

I never used to touch pencil. Only pen. But since I found these 2b 3b and 6b pencils round the house my shading technique has gotten way better than it was.

I did some pencil sketches too, and they indeed did come out quite nice. It think it's because the ballpoint is a concrete tool, you can't erase what you've put down. This way, you'll have to carefully decided which lines to draw, something that I don't do very often when sketching with pencil. Does this make sense?

Tinusch: Ever thought about sketching with a pencil and do most of the shading and then using a pen or nib & ink to go over pencils and give your piece a more solid look? It gives you the kind of shading you're going for and let you go loose during the sketching phase. I find this method the best for my own pieces.

I use pen and not pencil because pen beats pencil! HA! HA! HAAA!!

I do great shading with pen.. I know not everyone is so sencitive as me and has a fell to the pen as i do (ehehheehhaha especially when i drink vodka) BUT if you go very easy with your pen and draw very light, you get better shading (and more realistic) than pencil! Also i draw with black pen so shading also goes to pitch black ratcher than pencil's light gray-blu color ;o

I also like to draw very small and i have to be twice as detailed and i cant do that with pencil (not like i ever took that cursed instrument and tried lalalala!) Im gonna scan some pics later, my scanner sucks leaving weird smudgy and colored lines

later ya bums

I've looked at Cos' image, and noticed how it is very much like my own drawings (but cos is more.. advanced err) ;o It has very distinctive dark shadows which i like more than vodka or bread..

Now i gotta hurry up fixing my scanner and scan that bad piece of mine hehehe

PS: i whacked my head (forehead+nose)reaaly bad today in a car (Jeep) i didnt die yet.. but if i dont come back in 10 years, you know why =8-O

yeash Cos my site is very lousy.. besides i didnt update it for a few years I know i gotta make a place to put my countless (NOT) pieces and sketches. Look soon in art thread ill post some sketched swords of mine

And hey, whats that fiber thing you draw with? I draw with BIC (DIC hehe) It kinda leaves inc blobs but i clean the tip so it doesnt really matter. You draw some bigger stuff than me but i advance gradually too.. I started drawing like this a year ago at school, and my first pic was of a q2 guy without any shading But it looked nice so now i have much better pieces in my spanish notebook LOL

PS: shit. i just looked into my bookbag to see my pen and i didnt find it ;o NOOOOOOOOOO I LOST MY 10-CENT PEN!!!!!

I use whatever i find lying around me, but
sometimes i find the ballpoint pen to
be the most comfortable pen to use(it's so soft) My second choice is my trusted pencil.

Shizo I will look out for the sketches you are gonna post, I'd like to chek out your work.

The fibre tip.. The fibre tip pen is a hyper sensitive laser sighted huzi nine millimetre plasma constructed super pen.

No actually it's just another cheapo pen but it's a bit less cheaper =) fibretip point instead of a ballpoint, so it's sharper, neater and has the same level of black
when you draw instead of with bics were you can get different levels, which is why they so cool. Ok I am getting confused. I've been using a 0.2 which is quite fine line. But they have lots of different thckness. I think they are probably better for getting more
detail in your work tho, I hope you know what I am talking about now lol.

Did you only start drawing a year ago? or do u mean in photoshop? I remember seeing one of your photoshop pieces a while ago and that
was good. was a space marine guy from that new game that looks too good, forget the name.

I tell you one tof he artist's that influenced me alot was Simon Bisley, comic artist. If you don't know his stuff check it out. This site has a lot of his work on it.
