I have had a Wacom 9x12 Tablet for some time now but really haven't had time to sit down and do some art. I want to know what tools to use in Photoshop. I understand for shading you use the Burn/Dodge tools. When I used the pencil tool to create my images the lines were choppy. What tool is best for creating a smooth line drawing. I don't have a scanner at this time so I'm laying what I draw behind the Wacom Plastic Sheet. Thanks in advance! |

For a smooth line drawing I'd use the paintbrush, perhaps with the pressure only affecting the brush size. As for shading, I think a lot of people here don't actually use burn/dodge for it, rather just whatever painting tools they prefer. There's no need to confine yourself to just one tool, though. I've found that a combination of the paintbrush for rough sketching and the airbrush for smooth shading and detailing works well for me.

Hi Airnate
These are my preferences in Photoshop:
For a smooth linedrawing I use the Paintbrush at 2 pixels with smoothing,
this works much like a 2B pencil.
Vary the pressure with your pen and adjust opacity with the numeric keypad if necessary.
For shading I find that using the paintbrush at about 20% opacity and layering my strokes produce much better results than with burn/dodge.
I use burn/dodge for hard lighting and shadowing....
Play around and have fun...
Look at some of the posts from the people on this board... and much knowledge shall be yours.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give both ways a shot and see what my personal preference is. I can't wait to take my drawing skills digital. |
