Hi everybody

Long time no post...been to bussy and to lazzy. But that might change.
I'm creating this topic so I would be forced to work on some projects of mine. Its for a my personal website. I'm going to go freelance as an industrial designer, the projects I would love to work on need to be diverse bold, fun and different. So I want to show my future clients what to expect.
There's ideas about a new kinda zoo, a spacey board-game, new-water-heating-rooftiles, firefighting-drone, traffic-camera's, new-dolphin-friendly-fishing-nets and many more. Basicly the idea is that I'll be doing more because you ppl would support and push me to do more...go beyond Wink

Anyway the first project I'm working on is a zoo. A reversed zoo, where the animals wander around free, must kill to eat -if they are carnivores that is-
Every continent would be recreated in a mini-version. The visitors themselfs can navigate this mini-world-zoo via tunnels and different 'capsules'. In these tunnels and capsules much more information may be consulted via different media.I do hope the pictures speak for themselfs. Please feel free to critisize...

I got a vision once when I was at home laying in the sofa, this was years ago but I experienced my body being the earth and everything from birds to humans kept wandering over me, like a miniature.
I like the idea with the mini version, would love to see some more sketches, thanks for joining the 3d thread btw. Smile

Hi there

I've been fiddling on another idea: the boardgame.
Risk with a twist. The basic idea is that you need to colonize space.
You need to build colonies and space-ships. It would be really could if I could figure out how to make the layout of the boardgame random and playable. I hope to play a prototype version with some friends soon. If I do I'll post some pictures. In the meantime here are some visuals just to get you teased Wink

Wow the board game looks amazing. Are there gonna be exterior threats to the planets? like asteroids and perhaps a risk of being obliterated by a solar storm?
The layout could contain more galaxys so you would be thrown around the place....?
I like the black hole. Very Happy

keep it up

Hi long time no see.

Finally found some time to make a visualisation of my next project.
The fire-fighting drones. These drones seak and destroy beginning forrest-fires. The balloon acts as a adaptibe storage tank. They droid can 'refill' at almost any pool of water.
I hope the drawing speaks for itself...

Comments are greatly appreciated.

I'm curious about industrial design as a job. Is there a great variety of jobs avalaible if you have a decent portfolio and a diploma? I'm guessing there is more focus on designing than engineering am i right?
who has the most fun job do you think between being an illustrator/graphic designer and an industrial designer if you want a nice mix between art and problem solving?

To me it seem's you have to be freakishly good to get cool industrial designing jobs. I'm talking cars, sportswear, technical gadgets etc... It seem's a tad easier to get decent illustrator/graphic design jobs?
But maybe the process is interesting enough in industrial design, no matter the task. Also how to choose between a "regular job" and doing art on the spare time, how do you know if you are serious about it?
Sorry for this swarm of questions. Can't stop my curiosity. You have to answer with a full A4!

I Was gonna PM you but I'm sure other people have the same questions, so...

First of all There are some big differences between graphic design and industrial design. For graphic design the graphic itself is the goal whereas in industrial design this is just a tool to communicate and sell your ideas.
If you have good-drawing presentation-skills you are more likely to sell the idea. Or even better you are more likely to sell your 'preferred' idea.
So for an industrial designer graphic skills are very important but they are just a tool to get the job done.
There is also a big common nominator (?) and that is creativity, blood, sweat and tears Wink
Creating, divising things is hard work which needs lots of exercice, trail-and-error.
So whichever you chose it ain't going to be easy.

Another big difference to me between graphic design and industrial design , and this is just my opinion, is the pay-out (no not the $$$) but the satisfaction you get after completion of a project.
I just get a bigger kick out of creating products than mere graphical representations. there's just something special and undescribable about creating and 'giving birth' to your own product.
Once it was just an idea in your head. Some (long) time later you are holding it in your hands.
There is also a downside to this implementation of your idea into reality. Things can get really messed up.
Meaning your baby may not be born the way you devised it. There's other people involved. It does cost a whole lot of $$$ creating a product, which implies that the investers tend to avoid risks (being creative and innovative).
It can be frustrating to see 'your baby' getting mutated (raped) to serve all the interests involved. I tend to think that graphic designers can be more creative. Not because they are but just because they aren't as restricted as much.
Off course the real good products are the ones made by designers that had been given the freedom from their clients to do something else. unfortunately this is rare and it won't happen before your client trusts you a 100%.
I also like to say that it's not the product itself that can be cool to design it's where you take it to...
And yes, you really need a good basics of engineering and physics. Otherwise you'll just be re-styling stuff and believe me that tends to get old really fast...but off course this is just my opnion.
To me another important difference is the impact and responsability. industrial designers can really change the world. Graphic designer can only inspire.

My advice is to start studying your environment and the products it contains. If you get frustrated with products try finding solutions for the observed problems. Sketch them on paper, make variations. How would you make them? Materials, textures?.... Show your sketches/ideas to other people. Exercise, exercise and exercise...

Hope this is an answer to your questions.

Many greetzz and good luck

This is an idea I had while watching to much nature documentaries Wink
Dolphins use a column of air to trap a school of fish? Can we copy this idea to create new dolphin-friendly fishing nets?

Sorry just caught up with the post now. Thanks alot for the lengthy answer VERY interesting read. I understand how it could be really frustrating to not have as free hands as you'd like in a project. After reading your post and browsing through those sites I realize Industrial design is not exactly what I imagined it to be, could still be a good thing though.

Another one...this idea is about your roof acting as a boiler. A reverse radiator.

Last 2...
Now I'm off building a simple website to show these works. This should be enough for the moment.

The raincatcher will open itself when it rains and catch the water -hence the name-. You can use this water to water your plants or lawn. Off course you can also use the raincatcher as an umbrella.

The smellulator is a device that can record smell. Pull the cord and you can record a smell. Press the pillow and the scent will be released. Unfortunately no current technology is capable of doing this...but hey a man can dream can't he?

Many greetzz

Nice ideas. Roof acting as a boiler is actually how solar panels for central heating work. Pretty common thing plus it has more aesthetic look.
