I have a version of this that was digitally painted in color. I like the pencil version one much better for some reason. I drew it in pencil and used a blending stump for shading. Then I touched it up using black and white digital painting. I used photo reference - but no tracing or grid drawing. I used a guide frame around the reference and drawing. You artists should be able to observe all the pencil marks (especially in the fabric) and recognize that it is NOT a filter/effect. If you cannot see this, click on the pencil work at the blogspot - that picture shows bigger than the one here.
I think this picture has...soul.
If you want to see the colored version, go here:

*It is a religious site with a lot of music and videos. But I think you will enjoy the sights and sounds...even if you are pagan. _________________ I HEAR THUNDER IN THE DESERT.

being one person on this board that does appreciate the subject matter perhaps somewhat more than others might, I must say I think the rendering is very well done. But I agree with the above comments, something else is needed.
dont get me wrong, Im copying this into my inspirational folder.
I like it alot. but the expression seems... empty sort of.
Not sure how to explain it. |

yeah it doesn't really raise as much emotion as it could because it looks like... post-cry.
very nice rendering detail wise though |

very well done! however, if you want it to be more realistic, skip the linework around the hands and the figure. as others said, something in the background would be nice
as far as subject matter goes, i really can't make an input since i'm very non religious. |

Was Mel Gibson your reference? Looks remarkably like him. Perhaps, for appreciation for the filming the passion of the Christ? You did a very good job on the pencil work! Jesus wept shortest verse in the Bible. While on his way to raise Lazarus. If you are looking to expand this work by adding a background may I suggest Lazarus sister Mary with a small crowd of lamenting people trailing off into the distance? |

Really nice rendering. The hard outlines really don't have that "soul" you speak of, though. Makes it look cut/pasted, which might be helped with a background as was allready suggested. _________________ My blog |

I think it looks more like Leonidas in 300... I was really skeptical when you first started posting here, maybe more inclined to doubt as a result of my views on religion so I might not have given them an open-minded chance, but you've pretty much convinced me these are just very, very good pencil renderings. Your values are impeccable, and I think the realism of your rendering is betrayed by the heavy outlines - on a less realistic rendering they might enhance it stylistically but in the context of such realism they really stand out. Anyway, great job on these illustrations, sure we'll see more soon. |

No. Mel was not the reference. Funny.
I agree that more could be done. I did color it, which you can see that version at the website. And I did overdo the linework (and shading) because I loose some of that in the painting process. If I had known that I would have ended up liking the pencil better, I would have backed off on that.
I think I like it...empty around the subject. That way, you are taken in by the eyes, with only the hands that we pierced and His tears as a distraction. _________________ I HEAR THUNDER IN THE DESERT.

I think you can give it a background that makes it more pleasing to the eye without taking away any of the impact. That 100 percent white is just really painful currently. |

Yeah, I know what you mean. I am like that too, but in the opposite direction. If it is NOT religious I am most often not interested. Yet, the religious aspect does not have to be obvious for me to like it. It can be like Lord of the Rings, or Matrix, or Dune, or something along those lines - where religious thought is captured more in symbolism or as an under-current of the piece/story. _________________ I HEAR THUNDER IN THE DESERT.
