I was thinking it might be cool to make some recommendations of good art books, books about cg, software guides etc for people to put on their christmas lists. I'm affraid i dont have much to offer myself, I did get the D'artiste matte painting book earlier this year though which i think is rather good. Anyone else got some recommendations?

I'm very tempted to get myself these beauties:

John Singer Sargent: Complete Paintings: Early Portraits Vol 1
John Singer Sargent: Complete Paintings: Portraits of the 1890s Vol 2
John Singer Sargent: Complete Paintings: Late Portraits v. 3
John Singer Sargent Catalogue Raisonne: Figures and Landscapes 1874-1882 v. 4

Saw these today at Foyles (at a whopping 50 a piece!) and they look fantastic.

iandredd: what sort of art books do you want? I can honestly say that if you want to get into concept art, the best books you could get are scott robertson's books: "The Skillful Huntsman", and "In the Future" They really teach you how to change your working habits to be an effective concept artist. And in fact, they really go along with Vasari's book about how the Renaissance artists did their work, which was in stages (i.e. thumbnails, many preliminary sketches, final sketches, and final rendering).

I guess you could read Vasari's book too, it's called "Lives of the Artists". But I warn you, there are no pretty pictures Wink

also, any book by Andrew Loomis would be good. Unfortunately they are all out of print. Also the book by Richard Schmidt "Alla Prima, Everything I know about Painting". Which is also out of print. LoL.

I agree on the loomis books, I'm reading "Figure drawing for all it's worth" now.. seems very good and easy to understand.

you can download them here: http://acid.noobgrinder.com/Loomis/ ( i don't know if it's legal )

I would recommend to print them out for the sake of readability.

I wasn't really looking for any specific types of books for myself. I thought everyone could just mention any good books they've encountered recently.

I've seen the Skilful Huntsman on the DSP site it does look interesting. The working process you mention reminds me of Syd Meads Gnomon DVDs which are well worth watching.

I downloaded the figure drawing book by Loomis quite some time ago, definitely a book everyone should look at.
