oh...yeah he looks crazy. a few things to suggest maybe:
i like the lighting, but i think you've let it over-complicate the fabric structure. The waistcoat is excellently designed, but the shapes of the folds in the arms and legs look a bit unnatural, more like stripes or something.
Perhaps you could consider the strength of the light source particularly in the face - the lighting is a bit general in this area. I think, if you wanted, you could work up a much more sinister mood with a greater value range, and by eliminating some of that universal lighting.
Also, I have to say I can't read the (our) left hand; it seems to have...six fingers?! The right one doesn't seem to have enough; you could reshape the knuckles of that hand to show more clearly that the little finger is angled into the palm, unless he really doesn't have a fourth finger, that is, in which case you could put a little stump there or something.
Finally, I wonder if you could bring some more definition to the head and face especially where they are rim-lighted: to me, those areas seem to be slightly lacking a clean edge.
It's a really strong painting nevertheless. Was this a commission or a personal thing? |
