I am a beginner digital painter(that doesnt sound right). I recently got my Wacom Graphire tablet. Since then, I have been sketching and whatnot to get used to the pen. Now that I am pretty sure Im used to the pen, I try different stuff.....like full paintings. Most of the time, I do like a lot of other atists do. Block out the basic shape, add color, add detail, and so on. But, I have trouble getting detail right, shadows, and just drawing things period. I painted a flower, and it turned out better than I expected. But, Im not really into that type of painting. Im more into the sci-fi buidlings, people, and landscapes. Im starting to get into the robot type paintings though too. If anyone has any tips, or anything to help me get started with sci-fi painting....Id appreciate it.

This is the flower: http://www.deviantart.com/view/35439501/

A friend of mine on DA, also a painter, gave me a few sites for inspiration and help. This is one of the sites by the way. Thanks.[/url]

Well...

1. Practice.

2. For convincing environments - hell, convincing anything - you'll need to know the important details of whatever it is you're painting. Go out and draw, get photographic references of things, just look around you all the time and try to think of a reason for why what you see is there. Really though, if you go out and draw what you see, you'll improve your drawing technique, you'll learn how to simplify shapes in ways that look good, and you'll start to build in your head a collection of the important details that define scenes and such.

Thanks Affected.

I believe you're right. I do practice though, but the second one really got me thinking. I looked a a flower image for the painting I did, that really did help. It helped me paint in the basic flower shape, and use colors from. Then, I keep looking back until everything seemed "okay", and went with my own things form there. And, yes, I do agree about seeing things then being able to paint it in easier. My recent painting, is an example. I will post the link soon, I made a few changes and I have to re-submit it on DA.

Thank you again.

Also keep in mind that after you have the observation skills down, the shapes and composition need to have an aesthetic sense or value ... which can fall anywhere between Cy Twombly to William Bouguereau.
