since my digital art hasn't been going so smoothly heres a successful sketch i'm working on now. its done with mechanical pencil on heavy sketch paper. photo references of course.

they're all great jazz musicians. can anyone guess all those depicted?

Very nice sketchwork, do you follow a process, or just block in the features and shade? Looking great so far, I'm not big into Jazz, but they do look very nice... Going to try a colored version later on? Sure would make for a nice poster.

Cool piece I love jazz at times.
Charlie Mingus top left was easy, but I am struggling with the others. Lack of visible referrence of the faces behind the great music rather than lack of ressemblance in your work. Bottom left could be Thelonius Monk?

Guy in middle might possibly be Duke Ellington at older age, but I think he had better teeth? Must be someone else .)

MCMA. you got two of them right Smile that is Mingus on top and it is indeed Monk on bottom. The guy in the middle is the hardest since he was big in the 30's.

kmblackbear06, i use no real method. i just look at something and start drawing. if i do anything I make a constraint box to keep all parts of the subject proportionate. No colored version i think.

thanks for the positive feedback, and since I don't think people will get Miles Davis in the lower right corner, there are 2 left unnamed.

small update, Miles Davis is now finished

since either no one here likes jazz or most people don't bother to post anything but their own work, the other two people are Coleman Hawkins in the center and Sonny Rollins in the upper right corner.

so any suggestions this time? different techniques, glaring errors, things that just don't work? man its like pulling teeth here for crits sometimes. Smile might be better off going to a highschool art classroom for reluctant but forced criticism.

I like this alot!!

As far as crits go... Well Miles Davis's eyes look a bit like Golum's from LotR. And that saxaphone in the top right either got into a car accident, you made it distorted on purpose, or you just didn't take much time on it. The quality of the faces is just amazing though.

Sorry if I'm not terribley helpful. I go to that highschool art classroom every weekday, mister! (And not because I'm the teacer, lol.) You got critisisms in your high school? I get more on this forum.

thanks mega muffin. I agree with Davis' eyes, I could try and fix that up a bit more. I just didn't want to overwork it. As for the saxaphone, its inherently very intricate, the photo wasn't very clear so i was straining my eyes to see the detail that i did get down. I could have used another reference but i was lazy. thanks for calling me out on that Razz

and the internet has never been a good vehicle for sarcasm. Unfortunately I employ it oftan. Highschool art classrooms are notorious for bad critism practices. No one wants to offend or is so apathetic that they don't even raise their hands. I was just making a point on how great sijun was back 2000-03 or so. It was much more alive than it is now. More crits, more in progress works, a finished gallery that wasn't just a speedpaint thread. Meh i guess forums get old. most people drop off, the ones that stay have new responsibilites and don't have the same amount of time.

anyways I digress its not like i have much room to talk (leaving myself and posting little)
