Hello! I tried to find topics of how much an artist should get in royalties (in %) for prints, I have a situation with a company that offers 25% royalties of sold prints of my paintings, to me it sounds pretty low, but I don't know how much the printing/insurance/shipping is worth? all I have to do is to paint images and everything is taken care of this company, does 25% sound right?

Thanx!
John

Well, it's better than the 10% offer I got a while back.

25 doesn't sound too bad, provided they do a good job marketing your stuff.

A while back a local paper here in Atlanta talked about some local painters that were using eBay to sell their work and were doing very well. Just a thought.

But you still retain all the rights to your images, right?
If that were the case,I would just try it and see how it works out....if you think its unfair down the line, you could always take your images and go someplace else.
It does seem abit low...my instinct tells me 50%...but thats probably just because thats the industry standard in my line of work(tattooing).

balistic has a good point about the marketing...thats defintely worth some money.
..I bet eyewoo'll have some good info.Smile

i'm quite surprised that it's that low to be honest, i was going to inquire with the company you're talking to, guess i don't need to now (a friend uses them, saw your name on the 'coming soon' bit), 25% is low, even deviantart give you 50% of the profits after the base price, and that percentage will change for the better soon, i'd ask what lengths they go to market your work, as it might be a nce tradeoff if they do a good job,

twistedrealmz are planning to offer 100% of profits to artists when they get their system up and running but that won't be for a while, i'm betting online print vendors will start cropping up regularly now, given that every photo developing company out there is buying up digital imaging, i use bonusprint for selling them in the real world, DAprints for the online bit, quality is the same, prices very similar, am waiting on a better company to crop up so i can move away from deviantart (don't trust them anymore)

edit - 25% is good John, i based it on profit margins 'after baseprice', so in effect, 25%, is 50% profitshare (it's just the way it's worded by the service threw me off), really sorry for my misleading info, it's about standard, so i'd agree to what ballistic said about marketing, if they do a good job selling your work, it's a good deal, worth pushing, the quality levels looks excellent

(i'm talking to him currently, so if i find out before you, i'll let you know, btw, he's only offering us 20% Very Happy)

Thankyou for the quick replies! Hmmm, I'm gonna have to think a bt more about this, maybe the freedom of just painting whatever you want and not have to worry about anything else is worth it, or not Sad

Thanx yall!

J
