Ok so for once I've managed to paint a dragon that doesn't look like an oversized really mean turtle with an attitude problem! I know it ain't perfect, probably far from it but at least it's no turtle any more. One thing bothers me however I have been working on it for quite some time and now I am just stopped right in my tracks I just don't know how to proceed! Since I don't plan to remain a beginner forever some help would be appreciated here.

Yeah, I'm not really sure what to say. I like the texture on the neck, where it is textured. The horn seems to be the most off to me. It doesn't seem connected to teh rest of the picture. The neck also looks too thick, like he's swallowing an egg or something. And the body (I think) probably wouldn't go up like that (like another egg, lol), but would just be more of a straight line at the top and then go down for the chest and whatnot. The shoulderblades might stick out a bit, but that's it. Also, there is a much different texture on the snout than on the rest of the dragon. It's smooth instead of hairy. I can see the nose itself being smooth, but I think the cheeks would remain with hair. Oh, and some reflected light on the horn would help, too.

One piece of advice I can give you, that I only learned for myself recently (hehe) is to not be such a smudge whore, lol. Don't be afraid of some hard lines. Like, the horn for example. It looks very smudgy and bumpy. Just take an airbrush and do a nice clean sweep over the bottom and top,and it'll look better. And like, for the nostril, that could se more definition. Actually, you don't look so bad in that department. Just the horn really reminds me of my smudgey days. Very Happy Okay, so maybe you're not quite a smudge whore. Wink

Good luck!

Maybe make sure you can paint that dragon from different (more difficult) angles as well.
Make several thumbnail sketches. Try painting it with different color palettes.

You know the Loomis books?

There is some really great info on tone

and color

IMO that is the kind of theory that an artist needs to know in order to improve.

Don't just use black and white for shadows and highlights.
And really define the 3d shapes. You render them like beveled 2d shapes.
It is pretty tempting to render like that in simple side-views.

I'm not a fan of the lensflare-like glow in the eye ...
but because of that light the ear would probably cast a shadow on the neck.
