Having an interesting experience today. We had a severe storm last evening which knocked out power for 45 or 50 thousand electric company custromers. However, our little transformer only serves about 13 of all those thousands, so we got pushed down to the bottom of the priority list. Power not yet on and will probably not be till later this evening...
...so, I'm behind on two deadlines... Not good for a freelancer. What to do. Can't work without electricity. A friend suggested that I go to Border's Bookstore and set up in their Cafe with my laptop (which I do all my work on.) Working well... I haven't caught up yet, but I'm also not falling farther behind... _________________ HonePie.com

Power outage story:
When I was kid in the Sierra Nevada, one winter we got about 5' (1.8m) of snow all at once. It knocked the power out for almost two weeks. The town of 250 residents owned a generator that was salvaged from a World War II submarine, but it could only power half the town at a time. Usually they turned it on to keep power on in the center of town, so my family, our house on the outskirts, only had power for a few hours every other night. We had to put our frozen food outside to keep it from spoiling, but it didn't take long for the bears to find it and eat it.
The electric company eventually reimbursed our family for the food that the bears ate.
I had just turned seven years old and received a Sony Walkman as a birthday present. This was a great present to get, but unfortunately the only tape I had for it was a copy of Huey Lewis and the News "Fore" that my aunt had given me.
Imagine being trapped indoors, with your only electronic entertainment being that one album, for two weeks.
I still get a little angry and nauseous whenever I hear any of the songs on that record. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

We had a really bad storm too. But there was a small amount of rain, and a HUGE amount of wind. These winds were really really high. Trees were knoced down in a matter of minutes. _________________ http://www.annisnaeem.blogspot.com/ |

I tend to get a little angry and nauseous whenever I hear Huey Lewis regardless.
Two years ago when I lived in Virginia there was a hurricane that knocked out the power. We were told it was going to be for a number of days if not weeks, so there was a MAD rush to get ice from everywhere. I stood in line for 3 hours to get 5 sacks of ice. Meanwhile, our entire neighborhood decided to have a mass cookout, and everyone brought out all thier meat and dairies and started grillin' away. The next day , the power went back on and no one had any food left because the stores threw out all the perishables. Never can tell. |

I hate power outtages at night. At leat during the day, I could read books. Having power outtages in a crappy city like Fuzhou is especially bad, because going out is really not all that fun, unless you are looking for pirated DVD's/CD's/games.
We had an outtage once that we had been warned would last many hours. The outtage was scheduled to start early in the morning and will last until around dinner time (they schedule some outtages to ease the electricity usage--which is often over the limit). Summer in Fuzhou is hot and humid, and without AC, it's just miserable. So, early in the morning, we packed our Xbox, some DVD's, some games, some soft drinks and snacks, and checked ourselves into a hotel nearby. We just stayed in the hotel and slept the rest of the morning, then watched movies, played games..etc until the electricity came back on in our area of the neighborhood. Beats wandering around the crappy city of Fuzhou. |
