1. Do you guys think there might be some crazy millionaire who wants to buy a stray nuke for some personal reason?
2. What will happen if a half-megaton COBALT BOMB detonates 100,000 feet above the Pacific ocean? _________________ Human mind is the battlefield of good and evil.

1. I doubt any millionaire is so nonchalant about his money, holdings and lifestyle that he would jeopradize everything by doing something so stupid.
2. It wouldn't matter because by the time we knew it went off everything on earth would be dead.
Have a nice day! |

Cobalt bombs never moved beyond the theoretical, and I don't see any terrorist being able to use one. You really need a state with an advanced nuclear program to make something like that, and we seem to be pretty good about keeping tabs on that kind of development.
That said, the kind of nukes terrorists are most likely able to get their hands on are going to be fairly dirty, even though they'll be small in yield. Big, airbursting nukes of the type we have on the tips of our ICBMs are actually fairly "clean", from a radiological standpoint. They burn hot enough to spend all their fuel, and they're usually set to detonate high enough that their fireballs don't touch the ground (they do their damage with radiant energy and thermobaric pressure waves). You could pretty safely camp at ground zero a couple weeks after the detonation of a high-yield "city killer" airburst.
Small, tactical nukes on the other hand don't get hot enough to fission all their plutonium, and their fireballs come in contact with huge amounts of ground debris, which gets irradiated and sucked up into the mushroom cloud to become fallout. The fallout from a tactical weapon can be much more widespread and dangerous than that of a strategic one. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |
