Hi guys, I'm a sophomore in high school and I want to get ahead on the whole portfolio thing for art colleges. I've visited art schools near me (Los Angeles) and am excited about applying to them. Art Center and Otis seem like two great schools where I can become a developed artist, but I don't know how I stand so far with my work. Would you guys try to tell me where I stand?

Thanks!

iI think that you taking on figure drawing in your soph year is great. It allows you to reach higher levels when you finally apply. I think the face needs more attention to it,unless that is the style you wish. Amazon has amazingly low used prices for figure drawing books. Are you studyign this in a atelier? Schools also look for still lives and i think most importantly work which represents you as the artist. They love technical ability but when it comes down to 3 people with the same technical ability the ones who go further with their talent will be looked at again. But def. go to every schools open house, that you are looking at. Visit galleries with work from students, especially locals if they haev the same intent as you. I would say having your focus on your portfolio and admissions this early is great. Very Happy For the figure i think you should try very dramatic lighting and just draw shapes of shadows and lights. It is easier cause you will not draw a nose but it will be a nose and in that be more realistic. have fun and good luck Smile

ah, ok.. i hear ya, man. thanks. yeah i've lately only been sketching my ideas instead of doing huge projects with them. which is probably not good. and no, i'm not at an atelier. i just goto regular high school and goto as many life drawing workshops and classes as i can handle. thanks for the tip on the life drawings, too.

oh man that is cool. My school has zero figure drawing classes. There is a studio that charges 350 for a semester. Way cheaper during the summer but they jack it up. :\
