Hey. I'm failrly new posting but I've browsed for a good while.
I'm a junior in highschool and I'm starting to think about colleges. I am 100% sure that I will be majoring in art but I was just curious whether any of you artists with the expierience could tell me the advantages to attending either a Art based institute or rather going to a non-art centered university and speicalizing in graduate school.
Also, I am torn between Fine Arts and Graphic Design. My interests lies in fine arts but it seems that graphic design is better suited in the career industry. Is this true?
Anyways, thanks in advance. And my name is Cam by the way. |

Some folks goto art schools to become professionals, others don't. Different strokes for different folks in this kind of situation. If you can afford to goto an art school, to specialize in an art curriculum, by all means go for it. If you're apprehensive, try attending a school that isn't specializing in art. Alot of schools have some pretty good art programs, focusing on a variety of fields, so it's something to look into. So that said, I don't see why you can't learn art in either sense as an undergraduate student.
I myself am attending a community college, majoring in Engineering Science, and taking a few art classes so that I can minor in art when I get into a senior college having some developed skills to work with already. I'd specialize my education to be purely engineering, but in a labor market that's always changing, being a specialist is certain death, especially if you live in a major city like I do.
So my question to you is this, why do you think that you can't study art as an undergraduate student in either an academic university/college as well as an art specializing school? _________________ [:: Digital Marmalade! ::]

I originally went to college as a computer science major but switched my major to Art and Visual Technology. My concentration is digital art and some graphic design. I personally love art and was big into photography in high school but i am also good with computers and figured why not tie them together. It depends on what you want to do with your degree. I personally would like a job in design or some kind of marketing/advertising job. Other people i know don't know what they want to do and would rather just go through their art program and enjoy it. Depends on what you want to do so the choice is upto you and you can always change your degree to what you want. I personally am glad i didn't goto an art dedicated school for photography because had i not liked it i would have been screwed. |
