Just curious, any problems after installing it? I finally finished downloading it (80 megs on dial-up.. ouch), but now I'm hesitant to launch the installation. Will I have to download another 300 megs in patches? Will my printer up and turn polygamist? I know this is classic upgrade anxiety that comes with the new and unfamiliar, but XP worked fine before. Really, I just want to know if it's worth the hassle (if any).

I've been using it for just about a week before it was publicly released (came with our MSDN kit at work). I like it. It really locks the OS down by killing any attempt to run ActiveX controllers (the main culprits for spy and adware) and popups. Security was definitely an issue with Microsoft, so these measures don't surprise me. The Firewall will be enabled by default after the install, but I turned it off due to having a router with closed ports. There's also supposed to be enhanced mail filtering (spam killing) for Outlook Express, but I haven't looked into it. If you have any anti-virus software, you might want to check for any problems against it - I've heard of but not seen any.

The word is that there are some that like it and some that don't. I like it and am glad I did it. I don't have any complaints. Everyone I know to date that's installed doesn't have any complaints either.

One problem that I have heard of is a driver issue with 3dsmax6. If you use it, I'll give you a link for a work around.

My wife downloaded it to her laptop and the laptop slowed down... I mean really, really slowed down. I suspected there was a firewall conflict, but after turning the XP firewall off (which is infuriatingly on by default), the laptop did not speed up. She finally reverted to the prior XP setup and all was well again... without the new stuff... and with a number of hours lost to the experience.

That's odd. My wacom used to complain on logout with SP1. Now it doesn't.

I don't know if this is exactly related, but I had set my Windows XP SP2 to auto update. Last night, on shutoff, it told me it would update 3 items, then shut itself off.

When I woke up, it was frozen updating the first item.

I rebooted and tried to manually update - it aborted - updtae unsucessful.

Now every time I turn my computer off, it hangs in auto update.

I was apprehensive about putting it on my system because I heard a few bad things about it, but so far no problems on my end whatsoever. Finally, no more pop ups when I use IE. *sniff* Oh joy, oh rapture. Crying or Very sad I've waited for this for so long.

Win2k cannot differentiate between SMP and SMT. I have a dual processor machine, and if I enable hyperthreading Win2k will see 4 CPUs. This will cause Win2k to fail due to licensing unless I upgrade to Win2k Advanced Server. WindowsXP call tell difference between physical threaded processors. So, my options (at the minimum) are WindowsXP Pro or Windows2k Advanced Server. WindowsXP works better because it more effectively takes advantage of hyperthreading.

I won't install it because of the problems it causes with Adobe products.
I have Norton for a firewall, and AdSubtract and Spy subtract for pop-ups and spyware. I don't need SP2 and the headaches it causes.
My husband installed it on his systems, and it caused such slowdowns, he uninstalled it (he's my guinea pig for system changes. If it doesn't screw up PCs, then I'll install it on mine...I let him upgrade my old e-machine 500, and it's yet to run smooth enough to be returned to me. He won't say what's screwed up, but he's reformatted the main HD already (all my .jpgs and apps are on a separate HD in that machine, thank god! I can physically move that to another PC to pull the data if need be.).

IMO, SP2 isn't worth it. I depend too much on Photoshop, Illy, Painter and GoLive to trouble with it.
