hi,
if you are just starting out with the digital medium forget all about color and concentrate on getting values right and to get form to your drawing. I would recommend doing this in just a b/w range.
here a link that might be useful: http://www.digitalartform.com/values.htm

Keep on sketching, sketch sketch sketch. Study anatomy. Darkside said b/w range, so feel free to use the values in between too... Play around with the opacity and pressure levels on the brush to get different values, and avoid the smudge and blur tool. Getting the values right is everything. I'm slowly learning that. Keep on painting, and don't be afraid to make mistakes, there's always the undo.. Play around! |

I am going to critique your work to my best knowledge. It kind of sucks, why? Well because you seem to be using a mouse to draw all of that. If you think of really getting into drawing get a pad for about 78.99 bucks. from newegg This one: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=83-100-010&depa=1
Also, if you are can dooo take a class in college or high school, wherever you are going. These classes can sometimes be much more helpfull than a book.
Second, study shadows first. Take images with LOTS of shadows and convert them to B/W. And try to figure out
1) Wher is the light coming from
2) What shadows are cast
3) Do any of the materials reflect lighting, if so then how much.
4) And the deepness of the shadows.
It is important that you dont make all of your shadows have the same depth, else your image will look.... crapy. I dont mean to hurt your feelings. |

I was gonna do a speedpaint from the ref and then go back in history and save steps from along the way at the end. Of course my history doesn't last forever, so I'm left with the final sketch which isn't going to be of much use to you:
if your still curious:

My respect for you Capt. Fred, you did a great job!
Too bad the steps are lost, Id be very interested in seeing them, as I have a hard time copying photos and stuff. Well Im not exactly trying too hard I have to admit, but the times I did I got discouraged pretty fast, because my stuff didnt look anything like the original.
And Rakanja, if you dont accept and appreciate help like our Capt. Fred is giving you, and not even say "thank you" for his effort, then I wonder why you posted at all. |
