Sorry for posting 'slightly' non-art topic here. I've had some fixation on this cult SF movie after I rent it from a public library(not surprisingly in Silicon Valley, CA) back in 1997.

One main reason why I got hooked up with butchering up the original story was that the movie somehow influenced my favorite manga, Battle Angel Alita. Although the similarity seems to be non-existent, the dystopian future where a few chosen and privileged ones living in isolated sanctuary and brutal savage culture outside the sanctuary is strikingly similar with Zardoz. Even there's one scene where Gally (Alita in US version) wears a wedding dress, which is a homage to Zardoz.

I've been working on a 'remake' idea for years. The first draft ended up sounding like AKIRA, when this teenage bikergang Zed wreaks havoc but the story ends with a...happy ending. --; In fact Foo Fighter's Ever Long gave me an inspiration on overall atmosphere. (ouch)

After a few years I came up with a major revision that only Hayao Miyazaki would be willing to make. Now Zed is a teenager boy who's trying to find a cure for mom's illness and everything is so darn saccharine sweet. Even Exterminators are goofy, wacky villains who later become good guys, as in Castle in the Sky. (Ok, John Boorman will try to murder me if he hears this stuff...)

The last major revision ended up sounding more like Matrix Revolutions meets Rahxephon. Now the whole story became an all-out war between mortals and immortals where Zardozs are humanoids. --; And Zed, who was originally a savage killer and rapist in the original movie played by none other than...SEAN CONNERY in RED SPEEDO, got his entire noble clan. Ouch.

Now I've had some contacts with Tokyopop. And I am seriously considering my take on Zardoz into a...manga format. I really want to use any mean necessary to secure a permission to use the very basic concept and characters and butcher them into high heaven.

i remember liking zardoz when i was younger...but then i also liked the village people i think. some years later, it finally occured to me that these were GAY in the most gayish way of ubergayness.
