allright, i've visited tech sites.. tried all kinds of bios settings.. but this is getting nuts. if i don't turn my cpu off at least once a day, it does this.

right now i'm typing through a squished checkerboard of red/green squares overlaying the whole screen (n the pattern changes w/resolution). me and my bro believe it to be a cooling problem, but i dont even hav room for more fans.. has this happened to anyone else? perhaps i need to go water cooling?

thanks for any ideas.. i'm using a radeon 9700pro, asus mobo, 310 W..

try download new video drivers, if this doesn't work it might be a heat thing. Water cooling is only needed for overclocking, its never (as of 2004) needed for normal running. Download motherboard monitor and use it to check your temps. You can see if it's a temp problem by running your comp with the case open and a big fan blowing in it. (believe me, this doesn't hurt it). When we had just bought some of our comps and had no money for case fans, we opened the cases and blew big house fans into em. Actually...one of them still runs like that today, as it has for the past 2 years. Very Happy

If it still messes up you should make sure you are running your screen at a resolution/refresh rate it supports. Also make sure the video card fan is spinning while playing graphics intensive games.

If this doesn't fix it you should try hooking a different screen up to the computer to see if that fixes it. If it still messes up then 99% chance its the video card, and in that case you will have to buy a new one(or use the warranty). I personally know 3 people who have had to replace their video cards due to various screen scrambling problems.(I was one of them)

graphics problems showing artifacts like u mentioned either mean the hardware gets too hot..or more likely in your case the graphics card memory is damaged. *edit* if ur pc gets more hot when u open the case something is wrong then! normally u should have a very good airflow in your pc so its cooler with closed case. yeah well but who cares Wink

it only gets colder with case open if you have a 2 foot diameter fan blowing into it at an angle Very Happy

My card which is nvidia produces artifacts like those when it's overclocked.
Maybe you bought a defective card which was pre overclocked to begin with? try underclocking[?] the video card and see if that solves the problem.
