ok, i'm new to digital painting so it'd be great if anyone can give me some advice on how to make this picture more 'real' or at least pop out more. I have followed the advice on using all sorts of colour for skin tone. I drew this while my bf was on the couch last night and the light was a dull orange in the room so that is why i didn't make any shadow too dark or the highlights too bright because it wouldn't of been real. what do you think?

Well, the thing is that the range of values that you make enhance the look of your pciture. IF you use a wider range, or one that goes to absolutes, it will seem to pop out alot more. To help, next time you sketch your BF, find a light to shine on him either directly or inderectly, and apply that to yur picture. Also work the overall picture plane alot more than just one area. IT will help you feel like you're actually making it work alot more.

As for making it true to life, well, it's a reflection of you. It is partly a reflection of the subject matter, but it is you who is producing it, so feel free to push values a bit more to make it look a bit better. There is no shade police that will jump out of your closet, take a colour sample from your monitor, and match it up to your boyfriends skintone just to make sure that you're using the right colour.

Last of all, relax and have fun. If you're not having fun, it will be reflected in the piece that you ultimately produce.
