This way works better for if you want it to look more like a comic book, and less like a photograph.
first, duplicate your background or put your lineart on a new layer and set the blending mode for "multiply"
then create a new layer underneath it and put all of your base colors on it.
after that, make new layers for the different levels of shading, make sure you try to work as finely as possible. I noticed on your coloring you went over the picture with a big airbrush and didn't pay much attention to the smaller details, like the wrinkles in his skin, try and go through and do those.
putting the differnent levels of shading on different layers is good becusae if you screw up you can always just delete the entire layer or part of the layer without worriing about disturbing the rest of the picture. You can also change the opacity of the layer, and the blend mode of the layer to change the shading a bit if you want to later without having to redo it or make a new color...
also remember to scan pictures and color them in high resolutions... |

Ok, that's what I did basically, except the base color layer was above. I dont think it makes a difference does it ? I discovered the multiply function like a week ago in one of the tutorial, really sweet ^_^.

mm I'm not sure to get you right. When I make these new layers, this will be with my base-colors right ? Or nothing on it ?

True, I just used one "big" brush ^_^. I'll try to put more details, like some small scales on the skin, or making the eyes look wet. I'm not sure how to do that yet (the multiple shading layers, is that how ?).

lol I wish I had a scanner , but this was done with the mouse. On the sides of the face, it seems like pencil marks, but these are just marks left by the eraser and appearing when saving as a gif. I think it's cool to make it look pencil-like so I just left them. |

that's realy good for a mouse! good job!
Having the lineart on multiply is better. if you have the colors set to multiply and have more than one layer of color they will multiply together and that will mess up the color .
what i meant about the layer arrangements was:
Layer 4: Line art
Layer 3: Highlights
Layer 2: shadows
Layer 1: Base color
Background: blank
yea, the multiply mode is spiffy |
