Hey, ken here. I'm a freshmen in college (ECSU), and I'm majoring in graphic design. I bought an iMac, not the new ones, with dvd, but the one just before that version was released. Its a G3 333mhz with 160mbs of ram. I have virtual Mem turned off. I got all the software I need, photoshop, illustrator, the works. Can anyone give me tips on speeding up the way photoshop 5.5 works? It seems to slow down a bit if I have anything else open.. Maybe it's me, I'm used to using it on a pentium 450 at home.
Anyway, anyone else have an iMac? Got any tips on how to spoof it up or anything? I'm new to mac myself.

to speed up the mac: hmmm? Place a pentium chip in it lol...J/K, I ain't going to start that flame war hehe
why did you turn virtual off? Turn it on and see if it does anything quicker. I never heard of anyone turning it off before.
BTW, why did you decide to go with a IMAC? If you are used to a pentium based computer, why did you want to switch OS's and such??

Eh dude... 160 mb won't compensate the need of virtual memory which can exceed past that amount dude. Especially in Photoshop. |

with Macs,. all you need to do is set how much memory you want to allocate for each application it's somewhere in the settings,. |

uh dude, I still don't see the need to turn it off. I know ppl who have 384 MB, who don't touch the VM. But anyway, I was just giving a suggestion, it might help the performance on the hardware if he keeps it on.

Yeah, you have to manually allocate memory partitions on macOS. If you have not already done so, that is the reason PS is slow. Highlight the photoshop application in the finder, hit cmmd-I, goto the memory tab, and give PS what the system is not using. Copy the PS app itself and change the memory partition in the new copy so you can run PS when something else is also running. Hope this helps.

Oh, one more thing. PS has it own virtual memory scheme that is incompatible with apple VM. Turn it off! leave it off! It serves no useful function. Photoshop will take care of itself |

Mac's are cool and all, but not an iMac...
They got them at my school, and the G3 chip doesn't seem to do it for most appz.
I'd buy a G4-450 over a Athlon 800 anytime, though. It handles graphics just about 200% better and faster. hehe...
(Craig Mullins told me this. He's got a Ibm-compatible and a Mac. He only uses Mac for his gfx.) |
