I just got my ftp "adress" but I don't know how I start using it for posting. I have a mac, but access to a PC if it helps?
I know this probably is pretty basic stuff, but... _________________ Yeah man but it's a dry heat... |

A ftp is more or less like the Explorer in Pc (I don't know how it is called in Mac): you can move, copy or delete files from one directory to another. The difference is that once you connect to a ftp server, you transfer files from your Pc to a server. You need, obviously, a ftp client to do so (Cuteftp, Fxploader, etc...).
Once you upload a file (for example: "mypic.jpg", you can refer to it with an URL. If you upload to www.MYSERVER.COM/MISC, write down in what directory you put your files. In this case: MISC. Then, if you want to show your picture here, just write your message in the board, push the Img button above, and write the URL where you put your pic:
In this case "http://www.MYSERVER.com/MISC/mypic.jpg". It is easy. _________________ _ _ _____ _ _

I am not sure what you want here. Do you want to upload files onto your web server so people can see your files and images?
To ramble a litte more about what tayete has already said, if you had web space with EarthLink, your ftp address would be (I think) "ftp-www.earthlink.net" and then you'd give your username and password. Most ftp addresses (like if you have web space with a free web host or your own domain name) would simply be "ftp.webhost.com" and then you'd also put in your username and password. It would then take you to your "folders" online, where you could proceed to upload files and even make your own "directories" (like folders) up on the server space. People then can see your files on your server. For instance, if you upload an "image.jpg" file up to your ftp space, it might show up to the rest of us at: "http://www.webhost.com/myusername/image.jpg" (or some variation of that).
I have a web site and on my Mac I usually use Fetch as my ftp program. (Their website is here.) There's a free version that I think will work with OS 9 (so it'll be "Classic" if you're working with OS X). I think I got the free version off of download.com. But, I went ahead and bought the latest version of Fetch, which works with OS X. It's really great.
Let me know if this is remotely what you are trying to do. Or, if you are trying to actually host images on your Mac (I think this will work on OS X, not so sure about OS 9) well, that's kind of out of my league, but of course there is a way to do it on OS X. (I just need to learn how!) It should be pretty cool, too. I think there should be online tutorials showing you how to host your own site on OS X somewhere! _________________ Madness takes its toll - please have exact change. |
