OK - so I am certain there's a simple thing to this, and I am overlooking it. I am trying to load Don Seegmiller's brushes from his CDROM (enclosed with the book), and I am getting an error that it "cannot load an empty file"

what I am doing wrong here? Wher should the folder be? Directory path?

So spank me...Pat, Luna...

Hi,

You're not doing anything wrong. The brushes on the CD are screwed up.

You can download them from Don's site at:

http://www.seegmillerart.com/book.htm

Read the instructions at the top of the page to see what to click, then download.

Good luck,

Well Pat...I meant that I had probably lapsed into "dead end user" mode. I thought that perhaps I was just not paying attention to some detail during the setup, so you guys could've lamblasted me...

I'll pass on the spankin' this go 'round, since it wasn't my fault, really, but I say we should spank Don for releasing bunked stuff!

I'll tell you a funny story about this.

Some time before Don's book was released, he e-mailed me to ask something about brushes. I don't recall if he mentioned his book, but I think he did. In any case, I consider it an important request for help, so I spent a few hours figuring some things out, doing tests, and then writing a clear list of things I found and what to do about them.. that's how I recall it, at least, without re-reading the e-mail exchange between Don and me. I do know that I have a lot of experience helping people with Painter 7 and Painter 8 brushes and I always work hard to be thorough and clear.

Later, after the book was released, Don posted a message at Critical Depth (then IDD, maybe) in which he thanked "Jin" for helping him with his brushes for the CD.

Very shortly after that.. probably right at that time.. people were discovering the brushes were screwed up, the ones on his CD.

Very Happy

I've always wondered if Don realized his CD brushes were messed up and just mentioned, in a pubic forum, my having helped him with the brushes so when the **** hit the fan there'd be someone to share it with.

Been meaning to write to him for a while, to tease him about it.

Truth is, it's so easy to misunderstand the Painter 7 and Painter 8 brush hierarchy and file and folder management.. the fact that each and every file and folder has to be in the right place, names matching when files are associated, the brush category JPG icon image has to be exactly 30 x 30 pixels... and on and on... that it's no surprise in the excitement and rush of getting a book out, something got messed up.

I've illustrated and written many a manual and it's almost impossible not to have mistakes, at least small ones.

This is more a funny mistake than a serious one and at least everyone can get the brushes, even if they do have to go to Don's site to get them.

Poor Don, though. He must have been dismayed to have this happen after all that work on a beautiful book.

It's OK, Don. We still love you.
