Hi folks, I've been browsing this forum for a while now and have been greatly impressed by the work I see here--It is absolutly wonderful and inspiring. Speaking of inspiring; I've never had any drawing type courses or anything but I've always had a hint of natural skill I got from my mom whom is really good (or rather was before she quit pencil drawing). I am still very far off from be talented or skillful when it comes to art and Im not trying to boast or anything. Any who, I've decided to try and advance my drawing skills and digital art skills in one fail swoop by doing a lot of practice but purely on my pen tablet (BTW its a CalComp Drawing slateII, talk about old school).
So any ways, this is my first attempt at a digital painting and I am wanting true and accurate criticsms on the pose, coloring, overall style of piece. Don't affraid to be harsh, but be speciffic please.
Im posting the first 2 versions which soley feature my intended focus character.
This is THE very first fleshing of the character. I got out th air brush and went to town with no specific intention in mind and this is what came out.
This is a second attemp at the creature with what I think is a more meaningful pose and cleaner draft. Im thinking I may have gone too detailed in some areas (mostly the face). Any suggestion on a desired level of detail when sketching out a digital painting?
Thanks for you time,
Amithran. _________________ Im new here. |

Generally, you'll waste a lot of time and come up with very little if you have no idea what you're drawing before you start. Since you're just starting out and have commited yourself to practicing, you should work on the basics. Study form, value, color, anatomy, etc. and make many sketches to figure these things out a bit before spending time on something a bit more finished.
As for the above work, it's a good start for a beginner, but really is lacking in so many areas that it's hard to critique. There are a couple of beginner mistakes that you need to be careful to not turn into habits. Though some of your lines are long and smooth, there are plenty of sketchy lines. In general, sketchy lines are bad. Think long, smooth, and confident. Remember, you can always <undo> any mistakes, so don't worry if you find yourself trying to get a line just right and it takes a while.
If you don't know what some of these terms mean, search the sijun archives and you should be able to come up with a great deal of info in a matter of minutes. Keep practicing! |
