I was trying to paint a fat person, since I don't think I've ever really tried and I only really have an idea about how to draw normal or thin people.
The processes of mentally draping and hanging extra fat onto the face is not working for me.
Here's a pic of my attempt to create a fat guy, (I ditched the colours becuase it was hard enough for me as it was.)
Why am I failing consistently? I'd love to know.
I've taken a few peeks at different ref shots for general truths I can use but I don't want one glaring at me throught the process otherwise I'll just copy it. Plus I haven't acutally got any FAT person refernce.
Your help please? |

One thing that I noticed is that the skull is the skull of a thin person ...
maybe these links help!?
Skull
Face
I think that the main problem is not the face btw ... the way it's connected to the body seems strange.
Maybe the left cheek (his right) seems swollen. _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |

Good point andy, it had completley not occoured to me to play with the skull, I assumed everyones skull was practically identical which is obviously stupid.
Thanks, I will play with that.
But just out of interest: surely it is possible for a thin person to get fat, no? in which case, a thin skull, can potentially, have allot of fat on it whitout acutaly becoming a 'fat skull', in whihc case, my skething should potentially be able to result in a convincing fat person..
But chaing the skull will no doubt make it easier, so I won't worry about what I just said for now. |

As far as I know the person with a thin skull looks different even with a lot of fat.
I don't think for example that it can be as extreme as in your image.
Hopefully there will be more replies. I'm interested as well.
Maybe the answer is somewhere in "Drawing The Heads And Hands"!? _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |

Read Loomis' Heads and Hands book like andy says, there's a lot to drawing a head that's included in there. Knowing the skull's only a small part of it, there's also the planes of the face which you should study, I think your head 'll look a lot better if you studied the planes for a bit (loomis). Also not sure if you've been using ref but if you're new to heads using some kind of reference helps, preferabbly another person hehe. I think starting witha fat head's also harder than with a leaner one since the planes and angles are a lot more obvious on a lean face, like the jaw bone, cheat bone.
