A portrait of the lovely Jennifer Connelly from A Beautiful Mind and other famous movies. I'm not entirely sure whether posting this is ok. The original image is copy protected, but if it's against the rules I'll be happy to take it down. I got the reference from Movieline.com, to see it in its original context follow the link below the picture.

I took a bit longer on this one than usual. I don't usually try to copy a picture, but lately I've been trying to get my values right and this is a good way to do it. Sadly, in the past, I rarely used a reference for painting people and if you look at my earlier stuff you can really tell. It was really fun to paint though!

About 3 hours in Photoshop 7. Painted in grayscale, color added later:

Reference Image

only your second time using reference??! and HOW long have you been an artist?! i used to be that way too..."bwahahhah, i used no reference,,,im proud of it!"....trust me, it's not the way to go...not using reference makes your progress slower and limits your area of learning about shading, composition, posture...etc etc.....
now, unless you are constantly drawing from LIFE, then you have to start expanding....cuz it's nothing to be proud of...took me a while to learn that
----n e ways...good pic although her face looks a bit disfigured at the jawline
and probably the nose...her face in some aspects isnt symmetrical...but
whos perfect right....her hair looks really thick and i didnt look at the reference yet but yea...good

Opps, I meant my second time using a reference for portraits, but even that's not entirely accurate. I've used references on several portraits, but I deviated from them pretty heavily. Lately I've been taking portraits of people, converting them to grayscale and painting the values I see. It's a really great excercise if you've never done it! But you are right. Using a reference is very useful!

Something no one ever seems to notice when drawing Jennifer Connelly is the fact of how enormous and thick her eyebrows actually are. :D
