This morning at about 5 am (EST) I was literally shaken awake! Our ceiling fan was shaking, the chest of drawers rattling - the house was literally moving back and forth! The rumbling sounded just like in the movies. Just as I was convinced that I wasn't dreaming, it slowly tapered off; I just sat there in shock till it eventually subsided. I called 911 only to fnd the line busy! I then called my local PD, and they said yes - you're house did shake - we had an earthquake!
That was the first time I've ever experienced anything like it, and as minor as it was in magnitude (4.9), it was very unsettling!! Man you folks in California - y'all got some kahonies!!

I was awakened by it as well. I didn't get it as bad as you did, but I did look out the window to make sure there wasn't a mushroom cloud over Atlanta. |

Drew - I actually thought the same thing! It was 5 am and still dark outside, so I wrote the whole atomic thing off, but it did cross my mind - in an instant - freaky, man!! _________________ - Tom Carter

I remember when I was little there was a very lite earth-quake but I guess it cant be compared to those major Earth-quakes you dudes get, but I still remember that one.
REgarding atomic bombs, I guess there have been a lot info about terrorist-strikes against your country and all, If I heard a big boom and the earth were shaking I was also gonna suspect a nuclear war.
But Earth-quakes can be very powerful, did bridges and stuff get broken?

No damage, really - even near the epicenter. The magnitude was pretty small. _________________ - Tom Carter

Earthquakes like this happen all the time in the States, but not in the southeast where this one was. So everyone was pretty shocked even though it didn't really do any damage. I didn't even know what it was until I was listening to the radio in the morning.
If it had been a nuclear blast, I don't think the sky would have stayed lit up. |

We had an earthquake here as well, but I slept through it. I'd probably sleep through just about anything, though. _________________ ~Gio
