Hello people, im new here, a friend from another forum said that you all would be interested in this project i have going on, and would be able to help ... so you now all have the chance to help me out a great deal, but have a TON of fun at the same time . Im doing a big art project, and one of the artists im studying is a 'sculptor' called Erwin Wurm, who does a lot of funky photography, Ive tried out a lot of his style myself but maybe the best way to inform you about him is to post an extract from my essay:
...While traditional sculptures are interested in the transition of two dimensions into three, Erwin Wurms concept is very different. They can take the form of photographs, videos and installations, even books. Wurms main interest is the 'expansion of sculpture'.
The human body is always the starting point of one of Wurms sculptures. The human form is mostly portrayed in a comical fashion, often placed in clever by absurd situations. The source of the sculptures tends to come from Wurms imaginative drawings and sketches. There is often a play on ergonomics and the rigidity and incompatibility of the human form, in relation to its surroundings. In my opinion the one minute sculptures are a million miles away from traditional sculptures, traditionally they are a static object, where as Wurm transforms them to a dynamic event. They are called one minute sculptures as, obviously, they last for only one minute, before inevitably collapsing. One minute sculptures can occur anywhere at any time and are not always recorded. Wurm cleverly adds the parameter of time to his sculptures, making them much more interesting; the photograph or video is the only thing remaining;
Some examples of his work can be found here:

Now, what I want you lot to do is break out the digi-cams and create a one minute sculpture of your own, trust me, its a big laugh and if theres a core idea behind the sculpture, which makes it a little more than just tomfoolery (though tomfoolery would be greatly appreciated ) looking forward to what you all come up with.
Thanks a lot in advance

no nobody
and i may tell you the reason:
i know wurm, because i partially study at your university in Vienna and i really like some of his one minute sculptures, because they sometimes transport a little idea of something at one instant.
Its a good concept, but i think he takes it too far. And what you are doing is just another cheap variation of this concept and i cant find anything in your photos that goes beyond this basic concept and thats a pity, because you could play with this idea, find your own access to sculpturing with new media etc...
i often see the problem with the old "master system" of the university of aplied arts in vienna, that many students adopt the main attitude of their professor and just give a variation of it as an output instead of working on their own ideas and personality.
the main purpose of wurms class is to give instruction for future art teachers and free artists. but He completely neglects any pedagogic education, because he wants to build up his own new media class instead. Im in favour that he should have his own class for new media and ceonceptoral
art, but he just uses the art pedagogics class for his own purpose and turns it down.
A good friend of mine was in his class and she is a perfect illustrator, interested in classic arts, printing, etc. and she was forced to change her direction, or she should leave the class. She didnt get any pedagogic education too which should be a fundamental thing for a future art teacher (for a free artist, too i think) so she left....
i think nobody her at the forum is interested in these things , but as i talked to this girl yesterday about herself and wurm, i just wanted to give you some feedback and my own thoughts on the topic, i hope you dont take my critics too hard, at least i think it may be fun doing the sculptures...

thanks for your feedback, the project im doing is a small dissertation on 'con men in art' meshed together with a little philosophy of 'what is art' i intend my experiments to be able to validate wurms work if you will. as with a lot of contemporary art, joe public will naively exclaim ' thats not art ' or ' i could bloody do that ' as they wander into the art gallery, believing it to be a pub what i really need is people with little experience of wurm to just have a go at it! however crap it is... |
