Hey there. I have question about portfolios.

There's university Computer Science program that specializes in multimedia. I need to build some kind of portfolio with my application. I just want to know what to include in these things. I've never followed any art course at school and most of my stuff was done at home on my free time.

Do they give the portfolio back or do they keep it? How many works do I need to include?
