I'm working on this desktop wallpaper and i need some suggestions. i always notice that people use semi-transparent shapes, grids, and lines, here and there, or scattered text in the background, ect. when done well it really enhances the composition. how should i go about putting these types of objects in the image. please feel free to make changes, but tell me how and why you did it. as with all things, i know this image can be a lot better, i just can't see how.
i modeled the logo in maya, and i am putting everything together in photoshop 7.
thanx,
AaRoN

AaRoNBC : About the semi transparent shapes/grid/lines/etc., this stuff has been around for YEARS. I beleive it's the UK design firm The ATTIK that pushed the concept in it's infancy.. I remember browsing trough one of their book called "Noise one" (or two?) and see that kind of graphics for the first time. I could be wrong on the paternity of the idea tho.
Now about your pic. I like it a lot mainly due to the smooth shape and the colours. Hey they even match with Sijun ! I'm not too sure about the filtery look of those blurs tho.. What kind of technical sheet did you put in there ? Yes I'm curious heehee
Man .. my head's filled with all kind of useless info..
edit:I could dig trough some of my old design magazines if you're interested. |

thanx for the feedback. i looked at some images from The ATTIK and they definitely use the technique i'm talking about very effectively. I did some browsing around on the web and found some information on what i assume is called a 'techno-grunge' style. i'll play around with some line designs and patterns, i also need to enhance the text at the bottom right.
I found the circuit seen in the background with a search on google images. here is the link, it is figure 30 towards the bottom of the page:

thanx again,

Awesome wallpaper!
A really cool and available resource to this kind of stuff is Metalheart.. I own this book, and it's an eyeful of some fantastic digital work; it includes a CD of textures and fonts all free for use.
Also check out the ONDISPLAY section at K10000 - top of second column from left of page view (under Kaliber Specials). _________________ - Tom Carter

thanx for the links Gort. The images in the MetalHeart book are very nice. (even though i could only see the thumbnails from the website:) does the book just show pictures or are there actual walktroughs on how some of the pictures were created?
i guess what i'm looking for is a walkthough of the different stages and techniques in completing this type of image along with an explaination. similar to the step by steps people post on this forum.
anyways, i edited the wallpaper a little by adding an earth overlay to the sphere, fixing the text, added some green lightning and highlights, and tried to make it seem like the wireframe of the 3d model was morphing into the circuit in the bottom right.
i always feel like i'm never done with any of the art i do. but i'll stop working on this one unless anyone has a suggestion on how to make it better.
thanx,

your welcome!
No real walkthroughs in there, but the cd does have a library of alpha channeled textures and such. Just think in layers - these types of composites are nothing more than buildups of layers. Put the photoshop layers palette into overdrive!

Like Gort said, I know the ATTIK was doing hundreds of layers upon one another with different retouches/effects and what's not. Playing a lot with transparencies, masks with a hint of 3d to build an interesting and dynamic composition. |
