Outlook performs an illegal operation about every 20 mins, this little so-and-so pops up

It happens when I'm not even running Outlook Express, but that's beside the point, as I NEVER even use it. It just suddenly decided to crash every so often.

Anyway....

Win 98 , Outlook Express 5 i think.

I've gone on longer than I ever wanted to, but anyone with a clue, thanks

[Oh, I tryed to Uninstall it by going into Add/remove etc, de-selecting it etc etc, but it decided it didn't want to go, so stayed, to torment me]

That's exactly my point, it's not even in the Task list, therefore not being run, but still manages to pull an illegal operation,

your guess is as good as mine buddy

My friends computer was doing a lovely thing similar to that the other week.

Her computer would be running and even if she wan't even sitting at it, every 10 or so minutes about 40 ACID Loops screens would open. She'd go away and come back to hundreds of ACID loops invading her screen and a little error informing her that there isn't any memory left on the computer.

do you have the task scheduler running? check if any outlook related tasks are in there if so.

also check to see what the "time-between-email-checks" setting in outlook itself is.

does outlook automatically load when windows starts? if so, disable it starting upon win startup. It could be something else is trying to run your default email program.

do you have any cracked software.. try disabling everything from task manager and see if it still pops up... if not then disable one thing at a time until you figure out which thing it is you are running that is trying to access your email program every 20 minutes.

also do run some virus software... as mentioned above.

hope you figure it out.

Please excuse my ignorance:

1) what are the purposes of Outlook and Outlook Express? Don't use them. Probably wouldn't if I had the chance.

2)what's the difference?

Hm...occasionally, some program or another I didn't even know exists crashes. wtf? *beats computer to death with a stick*

yes there is a way to configure it

Use the following steps to configure Outlook 2002 as an IMAP4 client:
Start Outlook 2002.
On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
Under E-mail Accounts, click Add a new e-mail account, and then click Next.
Click IMAP as the type of account that you are creating, and then click Next.
In the Your Name box, enter your name exactly as you would like it to appear to recipients.
In the E-mail Address box, type your e-mail address.
In the User Name box, type your account name.
In the Password box, type your password.
In the Incoming mail server (IMAP) box, type the name of your IMAP4 server.
In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) box, type the name of your SMTP server. NOTE: IMAP4 is a retrieval protocol. You need SMTP to send your messages.

Click Next after you have completed entering this configuration information, and then click Finish.

thanks effigy, I just have office 2000 and I didn't think IMAP was an option (because it didn't show up as a server type when configuring new mail) but I figured out I had configured the Outlook mail delivery account incorrectly (by having used corporate or workgroup) and as a result Imap didn't show as an option. thanks for your help, it's running fine now!
