Sorry for being a bit hysterical
I haven't gotten any useful critique in a looong time, and I badly need it! I can't seem to improve this painting, I keep dabbling back and forth but it just seems to get worse. I would gratefully recieve any comments and suggestions!
Here's a few steps,
A fullsize of the latter one (after which it gets worse),
The face bothers me the most...
Suggestions on how I can improve this..?
Thanks in advance. |

so are all of these different paintings or what?? the eyes are different on some of these---
well first off i assume you WANT to make her face all white--but one prob is her jawline--it's messed up--and her body is a bit too small for her head--speaking of her head...THAT isn't the correct size either---
I'll do a paintover if that helps---sit tight--oh and don't spend too much time on one thing because you get bored of it and wear your creativity out _________________ www.andresguzman.com

Nah, it's the same pic in progress steps... Notice the head is smaller in the second pic (top right) i blew it up because i thought it was a bit small, but now you say it's too big.. you may be right though...
And about making it all white, i've tried shading it a bit, but bright colors are a bit difficult to get around, atleast for my part
A paintover would be appreciated, if you feel like bothering!
And believe me, i rarely work on anything for long, but for once i'd like to finish somethin'. |

Well here go. Try moving away from white for the face all together, it will be more nature. Do a couple of head studies first before attempting to fix this one. That is all i can suggest for now but i am in no way an expert.

The first one (upper left) actually has the least problems. The proportions on the face are much better here, especially the lower jaw and jawline. The eye may be a bit big but overall, it's not too bad. It looks as though you became progressively more frustrated and less careful in your choices as you proceeded. You may want to go back to this version. I think the snow white skin is very stark, but if that's an effect you're going for, it could be cool (no pun intended). _________________ Smokey, this is not 'Nam this is bowling. The basic layout of the work is good. Good focal point, however the lady's face seems a bit off. Mostly her forhead and chin dont sit well with me I think. Not sure why <shrug> _________________

Inspector Lee, i totally agree with you.. maybe i should back up, and make a few guidelines to follow for the face, and maybe it'll turn out a lil' better...
Al Ian, "not sure why" is exactly my problem! however..
Thanks for the comments, appreciate it alot! |

this reminds me of something i did. the face is kinda flat, you have to take your time and really look at a face and see the direction of the forums that shape the face. think of marge painting mr. burns.

I think hmm, should I help you or not?
Against Helping You:
The Admins Killed My ThreaD
A lot of people sided with the HERD against me in argument
I was threatened
For Helping You:
I'm one of the very best in the world
I can easily see the mistake of this work
I don't even know who you are
WAIT.. NO the ADMINS said I'm not qualified to teach PHOTOSHOP. How can I be qualified to give advice?
Yet, it seems to me that most of the advice I give on this board is the most precise and accurate of any advice. Why is this I wonder? Could this have anything to do with my real TALENT? I think so.
OK, so this one time and before I decide to go for good. I WILL HELP YOU.
First, you should get my article on visualization. Also, yuo should work more sketching but to get to the point:
The features of the face lie on an ARC not a line. |

light, you seem to have some serious issues buddy... you sound like a teenager who's just getting to know the truth about the real world, ease up, it happens to us all...
if you're really one of the best in the world, bragging about your self confidence is not how to deal with it...
seems like you're just foolin' around with me though...
so to not be all too negative, the arc advice is good, i overlooked that... |

remember when blocking this out that everything can be made from basic primitive shapes. Try to get these simple shapes to look correct first then go on to the details - e.g. like the goggles first make into simple shapes and shade them in black and white first so you can understand how to render them round with dimension to them. Also don't forget to have your simple shapes work with perspective. Find your horizon first and your vanishing points and make sure every shape is working in perspective.
Hope this helps. |

cheers for all the comments!
right right, so what yer all saying is that i need to work more with my basic composition, layout and perspective... blocking shapes etc...
i rarely do that, since i'm rather impatient i just scribble away most of the time.. but as soon i get back home, i'm gonna try a new approach...

Try designing a palette of flesh colors to use as contrast for your picture. Then find a magazine on skiers. That should help alot. Then make the back of her head about Quarter of the current size of any of your picks head width larger make the neck slightly more slinder and refined. Give the body a lot more depth. Not ment that at the angle her face is pointing that the right eye should be slightly visible. Also make eye ridges slightly more defined they tend to stick out when a persons cheeks become puckered from the frost cold air. Upper lip is too large. decrease its size so its about slighlty larger than half of the lower lip. The chin needs to be raised a little and brought outwards. The top left picture has an almost decent shin but it to needs a little lifting. The background appears to me to be just fine. The hair should filled in more in the back and brought down to the base of the neck.
I do not mean to offend anyone.
ThankYou for your time. |

okay, omega...
i'm not offended, don't worry about that
i always take critique seriously...
i'm however questioning your critique, you state the obvious, but the obvious isn't always the easiest, rather the opposite, the approach is difficult, even with reference...
i've read your other comments on these boards, but are you talking from own experience, or are you just re-typing something you've read? haven't seen anything you've done, so of course i get a bit conserned
i wouldn't mind using photoreference, but my first intention is never to redraw a photo, even though it's good for proportioning, colorref etc... i do have a big pile of photos of scenery and celebs on my harddrive!
i will consider your comments! |

proper, look at when omega joined: yesterday. I don't think he could have posted many things in so little time
I agree with the photos though. Getting some photos where you can see how actually ski glasses look could help you understanding how to adapt that to your painting. Ref is great help when working on objects, as many times we don't have a good mental image of how they should be.

I was talking from personal experience. Sorry about that hmm next time I'll
try to give a lot more detail as to what I mean. Also I'm just getting back
into drawing and art design. So lately I've been brushing up on my hand
drawing. 5 years and you nearly forget how to draw altogether.
Jees
College Work and other stuff makes for little time for personal pleasure. I
got another semester left to go for a pair of Engineering degrees.
I lost almost all but a few of my better pieces I've done since High School.
Oh well... At least I still have my best. Wow I just checking out my web site
its been forever since i updated it. hmm maybe I stored some of my
pictures away... has to be a few I scanned before graduating High-School..
Be Back in a little Also nice pic JR quite inspiring piece.
[five minutes later]
Couldnt find any of my old ones.
Here some I did lately for an anime I'm trying to make on my own.
Celen & Stena
second one is Stena still thinking about the storyline .. I'll start a new topic later see you later.
Thanks for time again.
