Hey everyone,

I've been working on this painting for about two months now, between commissioned work. It's faaaaaaar from done, but I just couldn't resist sharing what I've got so far.

Reference was used of one of my models for the human parts of the anatomy of the female monster. References were also loosely used for the anatomy of the male monster and the grotto elements of the background. Everything else you see here came strait from my imagination. Including all lighting, architectural design, character design, etc. I wanted to prove to myself that I can work from my imagination and produce results as good as, or better than, my referenced stuff. Plus, with all the pin-up I've been painting the last few months, I really wanted to do something with a Fantasy theme to it. Don't get me wrong, I love painting pin-up. It's a great job and I wouldn't change it for the world, but I need to flex my artistic muscles and paint something different every now and then or I'll burn myself out.

Anyway, what you see here is basically just the foundations. Lighting, color, etc., have been established, now all that's left to be done is the rendering (which is easier said than done). The ONLY thing that's even close to fully rendered is the male monster in the foreground and he still needs lots of work on his sword and some of his skin before he's done.
Everything will be re-rendered, including the torches and what-not and I'm waiting to paint the reflections of the midground elements on the water, until after I have the stuff on the middle plane completely rendered.

So, there you have it. On with the show.......

Low res pic of the whole sha-bang:

Low res pic of the male monster and a full res cut-out of his face:

PS6 on a 9x12 Wacom Intuos.

I'll be working on this as much as I can, but I make no guarantees as to when it'll be finished.

Hope ya'll like it.

Take it easy,
Malachi

Great Concept... Contrast is really good... I can't seem to do that cleanly myself. I'll get it some day...

Inspiring Work...

Thanks for commenting, johan_san. It's appreciated.

Ok, monster dude's just about finished. All that's left to do on him is his sword and a belt/skirt thing I'm putting over his "lower extremities".

Here's a low res of the whole character and some full res cut-outs of various details from him.

Let me know your thoughts.

Take it easy,
~M~

WOW! This is going to be a magnifiscant piece.

small crit: the lobster guy seems a bit more flat than the rest of the environment. maybe some back lighting on him would help pop him out a bit more. still, he's expertly rendered. the textures are great.

Looks good so far! I might symetricize his stomach muscles a tad - I know some people have muscles that are offset kinda like that, but it looks very strange :]

This is going to be a really awesome piece when you're done malachi. I'm digging that lobster claw like you wouldn't believe.

Nice work!

I just looked again and realized I had to throw in a crit (muhahaha).

I would recommend that you make the tail on the bg figure a bit longer. Usually (but not always of course) a creatures tail will be at least the length of its body. Easy tweak and I think it would help a lot

Thanks for the comments.

Jami Noguchi~ Thanks for the kind words Jami. I appreciate the suggestion on the lighting, consider it done.

Anthony~ Thanks dude. Just chalk the ab muscles up to another part of his over-all creepiness.

Jezebel~ Thanks for taking the time to comment sweetie. I'm glad you're digging the claw, that's one of my favorite parts of him too. BTW, you're totally right about her tail, it should be longer. Then again, who's to say she was born this way. I'll definitely consider lengthening that sucker. Thanks again for the comments Jez.

Ok, I finally got a few free hours to do some more work on this puppy.

Monster dude's done, next I'll be working on the female monster.

Here's a low res of the full figure and some full res details of the new work I've done.

(the fire reflecting on the sword is coming from the torch that's off the image to the far right, not the one directly in front of the monster dude)

Let me know your thoughts.

~M~
