I've been working on this for a few days now and I've reached the point of "I don't know if it's finished or not, but I'm running out of things to do with it." I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me.

I get a feeling that you drew the gun like that (direct side-on) because it's harder to do it at an angle? You should, people rarely pose at just the right angle so you can see the side of their gun and that's it.

Also, the hand holding the gun. When was the last time you saw anyone pull the trigger with their thumb? IMO, you should readjust the arm and the hand so he's holding the gun correctly. And it's not anatomically impossible by a loooooooooooong way.

Of course, in my crits I forgot to praise. I *love* the background. It's awe inspiring. And I like the hair and all the many different subtle colours used.

wow! nice work. The rendering and textures are soooo good. Great overall feeling too. The colours really add a great deal to this.

I'd say you are finished with this pic, nothing seems wrong at first glance. At second glnce though... His fingernails look a bit too 'girly'. too long, pointy, and the value is light enough to suggest nail polish. Was that what you were going for?

Hope that helps.

i like it. something about the left hand is off, i know there is forshortening involved but it still seems a little small.

Less art. More spelling. j/k

Very nice job, I think you nailed the eyes, I get a real sense of the character thinking. That's a tricky way to hold a gun, much less paint it. I think you did a good job but perhaps close some of the fingers more in towards the gun. Perhaps someone with a good sense of hands would like to step in at this point.

Edit: Or maybe the hands are fine....now that I look at it.

Wow, didn't expect to get this many responses. Looks like everybody's got a problem with the hands. I know, hands can make or break a picture.

Tiger Eaten - Glad you like the eyes. Eyes are one of the hardest things for me to do.

Dryfire - Thanks

Jeise - You're on to me. I think I filled four pages with drawings of a gun at 3/4 view. As hard as I tried, it never looked right. Then I tried to find some reference for a gun viewed at the angle I wanted; never found any. So, I went with the straight on view. I think it worked out okay this way. Perhaps even better than my original idea. And, about holding the gun that way, it is pretty hard to point a gun straight at you while holding it the traditional way. It's almost impossible actually, especially when in this kind of pose. Holding it backwards is a lot less strenuous. And I think it looks neat. Thanks for the comments on the background.

Ian Jones - Thank you for your praise. If he looks girly at all it's because I used myself as reference. Okay, I'll see what I can do about the fingernails.

JamesBradford - I know that hand looks weird. It originally wasn't there and I had to add it so it wouldn't look like he had only half an arm.

I thought of one thing that may or may not make the pic better, but you could add a tear coming from the eye. It's probably not the effect you wanted, but its just a suggestion.

bld - Why yes, as a matter of fact.

lalPOOO - Tears would be a good idea if I really wanted to push depression, but I was going more of a half crazy / half depressed look I guess.

Main suggestion: The gun should be in his mouth. Can't go wrong that way.

Seriously, though, very nice. I like it.

The guy even looks like trent reznor. I like it tho. The side view works better than a 3/4 in my opinion.

This is brilliant !

The gun suits the style, but I think its too .. whats the word, rough I guess, guns being perfectly straight and solid, it could do with a little refining but not too much as it wouldnt suit the rest.

Tiger Eaten said the gun should be grasped more .. I wouldnt agree, I think its perfect the way it is, but the colour on two of his fingers arent consistent. Is he wearing a weird glove or something ?

Nice! I don't see a problem with the way the gun is being held. I think it makes the image what it is.

It works better imo. This looks like they are very depressed and have had it with life and are struggling with suicide. It looks like they are thinking "I have nothing to live for. Might as well end it all."

If you made the person gripping and aiming the gun (as was previously suggested) it would look more like they are determined to kill themselves. Like they are thinking
"I'm gonna end it now! Fuck the world!"

Know what I mean?

Anyway keep up the great work!

show the little angle on the gun... nothing is wrong about it but if you just give a little twist to the gun and show more paw
looks more natural I guess...

looks good.

Getulio vargas, Brazilian president shot himself in the heart with a gun, and he pulled it with his thumb as far as i remember.

i read through the comments. everyone is saying:
'his fingernails are too long for a guy'
'maybe add a pic of a girl'
etc..
i actually thought it was a girl (which could explain the fingernails, and maybe the odd way of holding the gun:)
what? girls dont kill themselves??
but that's me.. and im crazy so..

and i almost forgot. great great drawing!

Thanks eyalyab. This is a guy, hehe. Nicholas. But yes he looks very feminine. He's my character and you can see more of him here: http://www.spherenoire.com/nicholas/nicholas.html I did this picture mostly for me, to try and create a mood, and I'm happy with how it came out. Thanks for the complement. Wink
