Well technically this is also my first ever digital drawing ... don't get me wrong I love digital art but when you're enrolled in Fine Arts your teachers pretty much frown on anything that's not "traditional".
Anywho, I think this sorta came out nice for a first try no? And no one is to talk about her messed up nose ... it's just one of those things
But besides that feedback would be appreciated
quick sketch

The pose looks great, wish I had taken more life drawing classes.
Skin tone and shading are difficult. I think the shadows seem too saturated/dark at the moment. Try mix in a bit background green in the skin shading, which would offset the reddish tone. and make her look more in environment.
Could also add some highlight to her shoulder-blades, nose, and cheek. That will help further define forms of these areas.
I think the background green should also be varied in value, so there are some darker areas that blends in with her form. and some higher contrast borders with sharp/clean edges.
I think Don Segmiller has a gallery of portraits. I liked those alot, check these out. |

Ill say this is quite a good image. I think it needs to be polished up a bit, made smoother, but the anatomy and structure is quite good. I think the colors a bit muddy, but thats due to using black instead of a darker shade of the skin tones.
The nose is quite large, but that could be the way the model actually looks, so thats minor.
all in all great work. keep at it. |

ooouuuhh ... comments YAY
Hunago, it's kind of funny actually because when I paint (ie with oils or acrylics) I normally do blend and harmonise my colors more. I guess I'm just not use to digital painting yet. But thanks for the advice, I'll keep it in mind for my 2nd try.
Don Segmiller you say ... alrighty I'll most definately will check it him out then.
Gen .. mmmm .. that is odd. I know that half the time the image on the page doesn't work but did you try the url?
Awetopsy, I actually didn't use black. First rule of thumb I ever learned in painting was never use black! My teachers were all quite insistant on that matter, they kept telling all of us how unless you're a master it's very hard to use black in a painting and make it work. Rembrant just made it all seem too easy~
Oh and about the nose you're right, that model did have somewhat of a large nose. But I find that's what made her a good model, it reminds all of us that nothing is perfect.
At any rate, thanks a lot you guys. I'll try to digital paint more like I paint if that makes any sense. |
