I really hate when I am just doodling with a pencil, and I end up with a really amazing picture. But then you try to spice it up by adding colour, or inking it by going over it with a blue pen or a black one. But when you have finished "enhancing" the picture, it ends up looking like crud. I really hate when I ruin my own picture by tryng to make it better. Arg!

try to find out what mistakes you made when you inked or colored it and then don't make those mistakes anymore. that's the way to progress. don't be afraid of making mistakes, it's the best way to learn.

its because you dont think about what you're doing. I've learned that the more you think while doing something, it'll turn out crappy.

I've noticed this too, mostly when I do thumbnail sketches with a technical pen on normal copy paper then scan them and enlarge them. Suddenly my tiny scribble looks so much cooler... sweeping, confident, heavily textured marks... Then I try to do something with it, and it just goes downhill.

I don't think i have theese problems. Anytime i design something, it starts out with a rough idea. I sketch it down, but i need to make a page of thumbnails before i find the right shapes. I can then enlarge and redraw it without much problems...

Yes, that happens to me as well.
Shadow-X-: Maybe, when you like a doodle and want to spice it up, scan it and experiment with it digitally, before you touch the real thing. That way you get a clue of what will work and what not and you can always go back to the original doodle.

Dr. Bang: I also think that this is at least one of the reasons. Somtimes I do something and in the moment I realize that I like it, I cant remember how I did it cos my mind was somewhere completely else. And when I focus on my work, I sometimes just dont get anywhere with it.

I do this alot too. I always think if its good at this stage, think of how good it will be when I finish it. Which is, sadly, not always the case. In fact, my favorite art is usually quick conceptual art, where the artist doesnt have time, or doesnt even think about the complete thing, but just a snapshot the feeling and vision he/she had in their mind. This happens in figure drawing ALOT. Its the most inspiring, because I think the true talent shines through.. So maybe next time, just stop? You never know.

Quick sketches are often used simply to 'loosen up' the student and not as a means of penetrating study. Often students do them well and are quite surpised at the results, which are far beyond any knowledge they have. The reason is that by working quickly they accidentally find the gesture. The gesture is a feeler which reaches out and guides them to knowledge.
-Introduction to gesture drawing - The Natural Way to Draw - Nicolaides

Maybe this is what it's all about

I run into this problem, too. It's especially common when I'm painting. I've often seen sketches that look terrific lose their charm when the artist paints them.

Something that helps me is to identify the shapes I like in the loose sketch, and really pay attention to them when I start rendering. No matter how detailed a picture is, when you squint all you see are the big and little shapes that make up the picture. It's all about them shapes (sort of).

me too. anything evocative I've ever been able to produce has come out of the split second magic of a doodle jam session. now if I was disciplined and would apply myself to the technical side I would then be able to produce works instead of doodles. ah well, not disciplined yet.

The best drawing I've ever really done was while I was sitting bored in science. It was of a window. Just goes to show how bored I was.

*muttering* I will NOT touch it! I WILL not touch it!
