Well, the basic plan was to do a "self-portrait" of sorts, with skulls. The end result, while I like it, doesn't have the form I was going for. (As you noticed and pointed out.)
I did a serious remix of it, essentially starting over from scratch. It no longer features my face though.
I like it a lot better now, it feels more coherent. Oftentimes my work of this nature will get "lost in the layers" as I'm trying to do too much. |

you underestimate the eclectic art tastes of the forum members. Just because the majority of forumers might not work in that sort of style is no reason to assume that they can't/won't appreciate or like it, so don't sell yourself short!
Nice work and some really interesting organic textures, however I feel it gets a bit dark and muddy and that some details that could be really interesting are sort of lost in the fray. Its pretty well balanced but by brightness default the teeth become the center of attention and its hard know where to go from there. |

i like it reminds me of the diablo 2's cinematic when they start, showing act I, II, etc.
i dont mind a little photo-manipulation as long as its in good moderation, you obviously hand painted the texture. |

a little too much clutter is all i can say.
hmm. maybe if you added another skull layer, this time in lighten mode and a lowish opacity?

Given the responses that any kind of photomanipulation gets around here, I have no clear idea as to why I'm actually posting this, but here it is.
Probably about 30-45 minutes in photoshop, not sure as to an exact time.
Let's see, "texture" is 100% hand painted, the "face" started as a scan of my own face. From then on it's basic layer work. I'm sure someone will come say that it's "easy" and that "a monkey could do it" so let's just get that out in the open now - it certainly is easier than painting everything by hand, but making something of this nature look truly good is difficult, as my thousands of similar "failed attempts" would show.
So, in closing, please comment on the piece itself and not how I suck because I don't paint everything.
Thank you. |

You certainly don't suck. I do the same every once in a while although I prefer painting everything by hand. It's the same kind of work when everything comes around.
I must say though, I think it's a bit dark and I can't find a pattern. It seems like you didn't have a plan when you started.
I hope you excuse me if I'm missing something. |
