Heh, funny He appears to be underlit(is that a word?) by the main light source, but if that is so, why is the top portion of his chin lit up and not the bottom? As well, the area above the upper lip and below the nose is well illuminated.

it looks more like a small spotlight straight on a slight angle for lighting, it's a very fun piece indeed . Never seen someone look so terrified before hehe.
