Well, I just finished this up. Got a lot of helpful suggestions in the Work In Progress forum. Really appreciate it!
Hopefully nobody sees any major problems with it.

Very cool! I like it. Cool design and the painting style works well for the subject composition. I don't notice any major design issues that need to be addressed. I like the color usage. The almost monochromatic background has a good feel and the more vibrant color in the character adds some good depth both in color and visual depth. |

Looks great Mike, I especially like the cast shadow on the clouds. The cool rim light is nice too, helps the jacket and hair.
I'm quite looking forward to "Ice Age" too, by the way. What I've seen of it looks really fresh.

Michael, I have to say I've never been one for that style of illustrations, but I really like this piece. The 'Rocketeer'-like feeling and the colors are fantastic. The technical details, linework and color is absolutely gorgeous. I really enjoyed it. |

Thanks everyone.
I'm trying to shift from painting in acrylics to finishing my work in photoshop in a way that won't alarm my clients. Plus, I don't want my work to change too much just because I'm using photoshop.
Cruiserhead - I've been experimenting with more subdued pallettes lately. Working with more neutral colors that support the key elements better. I think it adds more mood than some of the older brighter work I've done.
Balistic - Hi Brian. I was debating whether the rim light was too much, but I'm glad you think it's working 'cause I don't want to mess with this anymore!
I'm really looking forward to Ice Age as well. It's a damn funny movie that carries a really great style (something I think Shrek lacked). Not too many CG films are that memorable style-wise (at least in my opinion). Although, I think Monsters, Inc. is definitely taking a step in the right direction. A lot of Bill Mayer infuenced creatures there.
The Bill Mayer.com
Do you know Brandon at ReelFX?
SameOldShit - thanks!
Fallen - Thank you. You actually brought up a point I've been thinking about lately. How do you (all) tend to print your work for presentation or hanging? Some people do iris prints, some inkjets, some do prints on watercolor paper (I hear that looks really nice). So far I've just been doing inkjets to slip into my portfolio. I guess lot of folks here at Sijun aren't doing work for printed media, so this might not apply. Just wondering.
burnOut - Thanks!
Tinusch - Thank you, too.
Spooky - That's great to hear! I always hope my work can appeal to more than just one type of audience. I'm pretty particular about what I like, too. Thanks for the kind words.
I wasn't too sure how this sort of thing would be received at this forum. There's just so much sci-fi/fantasy/anime type stuff, I was a bit hesitant to post. But I really appreciate all the feedback I've gotten. It's been a very warm welcome.
Found and fixed a typo that was giving a pretty wacked link to someplace other than my website. That link should work now, if anyone has tried and had problems.

Nice....really nice!
You totally nailed it. I love it a lot.
It stands out so fresh in this forum where photorealizm and fantasy art dominate. I like those too, but I also love to see more of this type of stuff where style, design, and traditional discipline meet. I like the background now for some reason...
Nice work Mike!
p.s. I also can't wait for Ice Age!
The characters are some of the best ever thanks to Peter DeSeve. Peter also thinks it's his best piece by far.

I really really like this. I dont know why, and i dont want to say "it looks like..." cuz it doesnt. But your piece makes me think of Mary Grandpre's cover illustrations fot Harry Potter Books.. haha.. dont know why. Mebbe the image of tham man soaring thru the air brought to mind images of Harry flying on his broomstick. Cant wait for the movie thats gonna be out this november.
And yes i have read all 4 books. I cant wait for the 5th. PUBLISH IT ALREADY!!! I'm DIEING HERE Ms Rowling. (erm that statement goes out to Ms J.K. Rowling, who knows.. she may stumble into sijun someday.)

Breaker: I think I talked to Brandon on the phone once while we were doing Paw Island, but I wouldn't say I know they guy I know Jeff Dates and Dale Carman fairly well though. Were you in-house there, or did they just outsource to you? |

Good job Breaker, glad ya finished it up. I would suggest working on the smoothness of your curves. I'm speaking of course about the clouds. They're carefully fluid, rather than fluid fluid. I know it can be a pain to shade and highlight and keep it smooth, but it's worth learning. Remember to draw from the elbow/shoulder instead of the wrist, and do curves in long single strokes. Keep it up! |

BishopSix - Thanks for the kind words. I hope to keep posting new stuff from time to time.
Laemtao - I have to admit, Mary Grandpr is definitely in my top ten list of illustrators whose work I admire. You should check out her non-Harry Potter work. It's much more vibrant and the compositions aren't as restricted. I also love the work of William Joyce, Henrik Drescher, Mark Ryden, Gary Kelly... the list goes on. Thanks for the post.
balistic - I did most of the work here in NYC, but I did go down to Dallas for a week to do a little work on that project and one other.
Anthony - You're absolutely right. The clouds are a bit jagged (the big ones right?). That was something I was debating for a while, but I decided I liked the "cut-out with grade school scissors" look that helped emphasize the flat shapes and the almost collaged look I was trying to achieve.
I appreciate the comment, though. Thanks for your feedback. |

I really like your work and this piece in particular. The only suggestion that I would like to make is maybe to ass goggles on the guy in flight cause you really don't see his eyes anyway. You might also want to consider making the cast shadow alittle bit lighter and further away from the source so that the guy will fel like he's higher up. |

Hi Megatroid.
I was debating the whole goggles issue for quite a while. The reason I opted not to use them was I felt it made the image feel too literal and less dream-like. Damn, now you're making wonder about that again...
I was kind of shooting for a "Peter-Pan on stage" sort of feeling. I wanted the background to almost give the feeling of a stage set with prop clouds and night-sky backdrop. I agree, though, the drop shadow on the clouds does place the fly-guy in the same space as the clouds. Might have to play around with that...
Thanks. |

Thanks Dice!
I think the background was a bit flat last time you saw this in progress. I punched up the values slightly and made a few of the stars/lights more prominent. Thanks for your suggestions! |

Thanks, Waffles.
I just started a new thread in the WIP section called "Water Wing Guy".
Unfortunately, I accidentally double-posted and someone's already replied in both! Not too smooth, no sir. :P |

Thanks to both of you.
Hi Catnip. I've been doing editorial illustrations for just over seven years, but have been lately working on converting my acrylic technique to digital. It gives me a little more flexibility with the colors but without the drying time of oils. Then there's the added bonus of Undo! |

Nice piece! Dramatic yet solid composition. Is there a story that goes along with it? |

Thanks everyone. You've given me such a warm welcome!
renren - There's not so much a story as a train of thought that some of my work occasionally takes. This was originally meant to accompany another piece I did as part of a "land, air, sea" series. It took a slightly different direction style-wise because I'm a lot more comfortable with photoshop now than when I did the "sea" piece.
Haven't done the "land" piece yet. Hopefully get to it soon! |
