man, I can't thank you two enough, especially the mini-tutorial Socar kindly typed out (spontaneous? damn...). I thought I'd try a small piece of water to see how it went and it actually didn't suck too much, so I moused (I love that verb) Drizzt in and, except for Drizzt who refused to let his hair turn out nicely (that damn elf...), it's not half as bad as I thought it might be.
I love you guys, thanks again.
*yes, Salvatore's Drizzt. I don't like Salvatore's writing, just Drizzt. Which makes reading certain books a particular pain. |

You're very welcome--I'm glad the few words I could say about water helped you out. I must say, you've got a good eye for colour.
A couple of areas you might still want to look at:
1. The vague, blurry effect is nice, but I think the water could use some sharper highlights in places. The crests of the waves, even if they're not whitecaps, tend to reflect light in darts and sparkles.
2. The hair needs a bit more definition. It's good that you didn't draw in every single strand, a common pitfall, but at the moment, it does not hang naturally. Enayla has just put up a great hair tutorial on her Elfwood page - http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/loth/b/e/bergkvist - (hope you don't mind, Enayla).
3. Same problem with the cloak--the folds just don't hang as cloth would do. You should look at some...well, some cloth. Get a piece of whatever sort of cloth you want to draw, drape it over a stationary object (chair, person, banana tree, whatever). Look at it, get a feel for how it hangs, sketch it...work out just how to get all those nice folds and wrinkles onto the paper/monitor.
I don't want to overwhelm you with crits, though. Good luck, and never stop drawing. |
