http://www.bprince.com/bp_hold.mp3

(190 kbps, 6.7 megs)

I wrote this last summer and promptly forgot about it . . . its about putting your life on indefinite hold for something that may or may not happen.

No loops, its all single tone sounds arranged in Impulse Tracker. The sine wave was generated in Stomper.

Yeah, baby. Progressive house is my favorite style of electronic music, right next to industrial.

The only thing I thought needed a bit more was some chord changes, but I liked everything else.

I didn't hear a bassline?

Thanks. This one hasn't got a b-line . . . meant to be more floaty and shuffly than gutteral. I'm not crazy about excessive amounts of bass in general . . . I think bass is best used sparingly so that it adds punch instead of muddying things up.

i'm kinda indifferent about this tune. it's like 6 minutes of one moment. nice and moody, but when it's over, it doesn't ever come back. you're more like a painter in this song. i am more like a storyteller with mine, and also more mainstream, but hey, i see the technical prowess and i can appreciate it. mixing could be improved some more. definition of the various instruments is good, but there's eq holes, especially in the lower frequencies. i think that a bass would have done the tune good, not bad.

anyway, i kinda.. kinda like it. kinda don't care much

I appreciate the critique . . . most of my tracks are just meant to be frozen moments . . . I have as much interest in telling stories with my music as I do with my visual art . . . that is to say, no interest whatsoever I'm more interested in taking a fleeting feeling (like that little tension just before a first kiss) and stretching it out long enough to appreciate it.

I've planned animations around some of my music, and the constant theme was always "stasis" . . . cameras would move, and light would play, but the participants were always still, or reduced to ultra slow motion.

As far as EQ holes, I suppose that's a matter of taste . . . to me, leaving a gap in the frequency coverage is like not using a certain color in a painting . . . actually, if you think about it scientifically, color and pitch are quite analagous. Maybe amplitude is saturation and frequency is hue . . .hmmm, could be interesting to explore . . .

i've read an interesting piece by dilvish (remember him?) on sample editing with photoshop. he took a raw sample, loaded it as a greyscale pic into photoshop and edited away.

contrast equaled amplitude for example.

there must be a way to do it the other way round as well. i'd LOVE to see what reverb looks like.

I think just about everybody has accidentally loaded cache.its as a sample once or twice
