I have been working for like 5 months to find a style for my comic book....I took about a year and a half off from art and it has been a long hard road back to being an artist. Anyway without further adu here is a pic I did for a friends comic book....I am really heavily thinking of doing a whole comic like this. Part Photomanip/part 3D....and part painted.
Feedback wanted.
As far as the story behind the pic. In the comicbook there are some scientists who are developing this superman serum. They experiment on all these convicts and they die until one day when they try it on the worst psycho of all....nuff said. The story has sooooo much in it and that is only a little slice. |

I like it nickmarksdotcom. This type of deconstructed photomontage has been effective for other artists and is great for telling stories with metaphors and unconventional narratives.
Check out Dave Mckean (Sandman covers) and Bill Sienkiewicz (Stray Toasters) for the best examples. You may also be interested in Ted McKeever's work (Industrial Gothic), a traditional artist who paints in this type of chaotic style. Gavin Wilson and Richard Brunning (Sandman Mystery Theatre) are another team who come to mind who use a lot of manipulated photographic imagery . These are just of the top of my head, and I'm sure there are some I'm forgetting.
You may also want to check out (if you don't already do so) Print Magazine, Society of Illustrators and the various Graphis annuals for other examples as this type of style, which has been used succesfully in the visual commication field for a while now. I'm sure you'll find synergies and inspiration from successful illustrators like Barron Storey and less know ones like Shane Rebenschied or Alicia Buelow...

Don't you just hate it when it rains giant syringes filled with death? |

Thanks Visual Myriad! I have heard of a ton of those artists before but some of them I haven't. One thing about them is most of them usually only do covers and never do the inside of the books? I wonder why that is.
I am going to go order Industrial Gothic and Stray Toasters from my comic shop now Thanks so much for all the helpful tips.
Yes Subhuman...I hate it when that happens too I felt it was high time someone did a picture dealing with that issue. hehehe |
